The ViewLondon Review
Although the quality varies from pub-to-pub, Wetherspoons always maintains it dedication to real ale at good prices. The Skylark adheres to this but adds a hint of style.
The Venue
Yes, you guessed it: The Skylark is one big pub. But then, let’s face it, there’s no such thing as a small Wetherspoons. This pub is spread across two floors with private functions hosted upstairs, reached via a rather fancy staircase. It can feel a little dark inside thanks to all the dark woods that cover everything from the bar to the many tables and chairs, but it’s given a lift thanks to the historical decorations that cover the walls. This is a pub that’s proud to be in Croydon and they show off their heritage with images of what it used to look like, facts about Croydon’s landmarks and even newspaper clippings. It’s a nice touch.
The Atmosphere
While The Skylark is able to accommodate a large crowd of beer drinkers, in the day it can be a little empty, which can make it feel rather sparse. The usual old man beer drinkers prop up the bar and locals pop in and out at a leisurely pace. The staff are friendly, although it may be because they’re bored and want someone to talk to, and they know their beer, offering tasters before you buy if you’re not sure what to order.
The Food
Pub grub at cheap prices. Burgers, pies, chips, steak. Stodge, stodge and more stodge to line the stomach. But with prices below £10 it won’t break the bank and is a cheap meal out – it’s even cheaper if you make the most of one of their many meal deals.
The Drink
Wetherspoons is all about the beer and it’s not hard to see why it’s Cask Marque accredited. As well as some good high street lagers they also offer unusual ales like Wychwood’s Elderwych, Audit Ale and Dark Star. And the ale is well kept and good quality, especially when you consider that it’s possible to order a pint for less than two quid here.
The Last Word
The Skylark is a great example of a Wetherspoon's done good.
