The ViewLondon Review
Slug and Lettuce may not fill you with excitement – it is just a chain pub, after all – but it’s actually a nice place you can bring the kids to during the day on Muswell Hill Broadway. The VenueWhen you walk past the huge floor-to-ceiling windows that are folded open in the summer, you can’t help but wish you were one of the lucky few sat on one of the excessively comfy sofas looking out onto the street. When you step inside, the warm Mediterranean-like oranges and reds on the walls keep the place feeling snug.
The lounge area overlooking the bus stop feels all the more homely thanks to the carpet, while closer to the bar the wooden floor and high tables with matching stools maintain the pub theme. There are plenty of tables and chairs for those who wish to tuck into some Slug and Lettuce pub nosh, and the large widescreen TV can be seen by practically anyone in these seats. Moving toward the back of the venue is another lounge area located next to a very modern, stylish fireplace. The seating here is as comfortable as that at the front of the house, only you don’t have to put up with the prying eyes of the public as they pace up and down waiting for the bus.
The beer garden at the back is quite small and surrounded by very high walls on all sides. It’s enough for the smokers but it doesn’t exactly invite one out for a nice cool drink on a summer’s day.
The AtmosphereAll kinds of people come to the Slug and Lettuce. Young couples, old couples, families, groups of friends and work colleagues – the whole spectrum of Muswell Hill locals. It offers an atmosphere that you can’t help but embrace and the space provides plenty of room for moving around so you don’t feel like the walls are caving in. The table service during lunch and dinner is a nice touch and something they are very efficient at doing.
The FoodThe Slug and Lettuce is not afraid to boast about its food and offers a wide selection of dishes. Starters range in price from £4.25-£5.95. Sandwiches, wraps and flat breads can be had for between £5.45 and £7.45. A selection of burgers, salads and main courses sit at around the £9 mark whilst a dessert costs no more than £3.95. There are various special offers available as well, and if you want to be guaranteed a particular sofa or table then you can book ahead.
The DrinkThere is a decent selection of beer on tap, including Fruli, Heineken, Becks Vier, Peroni, Amstel Bier, Stella, Guinness, Strongbow and Heineken. However, if you’re in the mood you can opt for one of the Champagnes, wines, Champagne cocktails or martini cocktails, instead. If alcohol isn’t for you then you might want to try a mocktail or smoothie. If it’s just a coffee that you’ve been aching for then they have a wonderful selection of those as well.
The Last WordGreat for the whole family - if you’re in Muswell Hill and fancy having a nice lunch and bevvie somewhere, the Slug and Lettuce is a fine choice.
