The ViewLondon Review
Even though the Cutty Sark is still missing in action, Maritime Greenwich has more up its sleeve. The Spanish Galleon happily steps up to provide tired tourists and locals with food and drink, and does so with quality in mind.
The Venue
Situated in the centre of Maritime Greenwich, a stones throw away from the Docklands Light Railway and a minor walk from the river port, The Spanish Galleon is very conveniently located.
The venue itself is spacious with a traditional feel. There are two bars for busy spells and an extension to the main bar for evening and lunchtime relaxing. Adorning the walls are various maritime pieces, be it sketches, port holes or pressure monitors - all linked to the history of the area.
The Atmosphere
This pub is for relaxing – a classic Sunday afternoon venture. The Spanish Galleon is not a party pub, although there is background music, revellers celebrating the weekend tend to end up elsewhere. That said, this is the perfect first stop on a night out in the area and precisely right for a long evening of putting the world to rights.
While the weekend sees an increase in the tourist presence, this doesn’t distract from the quality of the place and, if anything, just makes the staff step up the pace. Furthermore, sporting events are covered with the two bars showing games that clash, be it rugby or football.
The Food
There is no denying the food at The Spanish Galleon is top notch and reasonably priced. Whether you’re just grabbing a quick sandwich or having a proper sit down meal, you would be hard pressed to find fault here.
The quality of the food comes from it being prepared fresh on site, the burgers are homemade and the shepherds pie put together daily. A fish and chip supper will set you back £8.95 and, considering the quality, you will not begrudge this in the slightest – knowing the fish came from Billingsgate the same day does mean the standard is high. Other highlights include the homemade burgers at £6.95; again, once started you can tell that quality is of paramount importance to the place. The menu overall is varied, with starters and desserts to suit all palettes.
The Drink
A good selection of reasonably priced wines are available here, a fair number of which are around £12 per bottle. The Spanish Galleon is also clearly proud of its Cask Ales, choices including Bishops Finger, Kents Best, Master Brew and Spitfire – you are looking at just over £3 a hit. Bottled beers are, of course, available, again at the £3 mark, with Corona and Asahi on offer. Sprits and mixers are priced around standard London rates and the usual selection is available.
The Last Word
The Spanish Galleon fits perfectly into its surroundings and it would be a shame for you to be in Greenwich and miss it. With fair prices, high quality food and an atmosphere that lets you relax, you can only appreciate the entire set up.
