The ViewLondon Review
This buzzy and bustling neighborhood bar has a prime dockside spot. Pints by the waterside all around at The Spinnaker.
The Venue
The Spinnaker is part of the Greene King chain of pubs, which generally conjures up a well run middle-of-the-road local pub. If it wasn't for the waterside view from the full length glass on two sides, this could be an average boozer anywhere. What makes it rise above the ordinary are those three buzz words of the real estate biz - location, location, location. For once, smokers get the best view in the house with a narrow balcony overlooking the water, which runs the length of the building.
The Atmosphere
Convivial. Jovial. Middle aged. Staff keep themselves busy clearing empties and checking toilets. There is enough noise to give it a buzz - aided by the ‘80s soundtrack - but quiet enough to converse comfortably. Nearby is an interesting mix of businesses and residences and this is reflected in the clientele.
The Food
The good news is The Spinnaker offers 18 different varieties of burgers with chips and coleslaw for under nine quid. Crazy flavours like reggae, pesto, surf and turf (with scampi), and chicken Caesar beg to be tested. The bad news is they only serve them until 3pm. Curse you Greene King! After 3pm you have your choice of crisps or nuts.
The Drink
You've got all your usual friends at The Spinnaker. There's Mr Guinness and Mr Kronenbourg and all their regular cohorts. The guests at the party are draught Peroni (the Italian guest) and Abbot Ale (every party should have a man of the cloth). For those who subscribe to the motto in vino veritas they offer a 'buy two glasses and get the bottle for free' deal, so most bottles can be yours for about a tenner.
The Last Word
The Spinnaker is casual, cool, friendly and has great waterside views. Well recommended.
