The ViewLondon Review
Described as the oldest pub on the high street, a refurb has made this local the new kid on the block. Thankfully, the local charm and hospitality remains, but the surroundings are as fresh as the gourmet pub grub dished up by the kitchen.
The Venue
From the end of Putney High Street, The Spotted Horse looks just as it always has and locals might dismiss it as ‘that old pub near the corner’. However, on closer inspection you see plush purple cushions and tea light candles glimmering through the mock Tudor windows, as you walk in to a part Moroccan haven, part country inn. The cosy cushioned seating and sofas near the doors fill up quickly, but you should still be able to snap up a spot at one of the tables close to the bar or further through to the dining area. A huge skylight in the centre of the main room fills the pub with light even on the dreariest of London days and the walls are adorned with photos and portraits of Putney locals and old street scenes, only adding to the charming comfort of the whole place.
The Atmosphere
Trendy twenty-somethings mingle with older regular punters who keep their spots at the bar. The bar staff are welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable of both the food and drink menus. The atmosphere is a cosy and comfortable one and you’d be forgiven for feeling like reclining into the cushions or popping your feet on one of the low tables as you sink into a sofa and unwind.
The Food
Expect top notch pub grub at The Spotted Horse, but not so posh that they’ve taken the old favourites off the menu. Classics like beef burgers, fish and chips and steak and ale pie grace the menu with more modern pub fare like risottos, warm salads and pan fried chicken and duck breasts. There is also a range of sharing platters and mezze plates, perfect for nibbling over drinks or while you peruse the menu. You can eat in the bar area or dining room and the selection and prices don’t differ. There are blackboard specials that change often, so be sure to check what’s on offer before choosing from the scrumptious regular menu.
The Drink
A Youngs Pub, The Spotted Horse claims to serve the widest range of Youngs beers and ales in Putney, so pint lovers are well looked after. Wine aficionados aren’t neglected though, with an extensive and well priced wine list taking in European and New World varieties. But if its cocktails you’re after then you might be disappointed to find there’s only one on the menu – a potent Bloody Mary – with the promise of adding more to the mix.
The Last Word
As far as local pubs go, and High Street ones at that, The Spotted Horse is gem. Looking fresh and new since its makeover it’s managed to retain its local charm without becoming over-trendy or pretentious.
