A stalwart of Enfield town, this smart pub-cum-bar might be small, but it’s a decent shout in an area where decent boozers are hard to find.

The Venue
A couple of al fresco tables that overlook a bus depot (of sorts) doesn’t sound like the most attractive of drinking spots, but The Stag is up the posh end of Enfield town, just round the corner from the very des res Gentleman’s Row – which is every bit as salubrious as it sounds. It’s certainly an attractive enough place, with a relatively recent paint job keeping things looking good from the outside, and a simple, modern aesthetic keeping things comfy and pleasant inside. It’s not the largest of places, so it can get a bit cosy on Friday nights, but grab a seat round the corner and you should be okay to settle in for the evening.

The Atmosphere
The Stag attracts a slightly older crowd than those further down the high street, and is therefore a much more civilised affair than the Friday night flesh show of, say, The George, on the high street. Of course you might come across the odd tasty gripper with an axe to grind, but they’re few and far between… or have headed off down Tottenham way. Staff are perfectly pleasant, even if they don’t break too much of a sweat to make you feel welcome – friendly efficiency, perhaps.

The Drink
A perfectly passable pint of Guinness is certainly one of your best bets, but if you’re into your lager then you should be very pleased (and in good company), with well kept Becks Vier, Carlsberg, Stella, Amstel and Fosters on tap, complemented by bottles of Sol and Corona. John Smiths is pretty smooth and Strongbow agreeably fizzy, but if you want wine then opt for one of the mid range options – the house isn’t particularly great and spending a little more seems pretty rewarding.

The Last Word
A perfectly decent bar that’s certainly one of the better ones in Enfield, especially if you want to avoid anything particularly raucous, or anything particularly old.
