Love this pub, really cosy and welcoming. Went there last night and the staff were very attentive. The food is slightly over priced although it is delicious. Will definitely be returning
A group of us had Sunday lunch in this pub which ha a lot going for it. Great windows with lots of natural light and potentially a great venue. However, lack of hospitality in the main and attentiveness. Food was mixed - a great deal of fat on roast beef and I suggested to Chef that this be trimmed before serving. My feedback was almost dismissed but I would like to see this pub as successful as possible and for people to go back. Also re: Sunday roast beef - mix of well done and totally rare beef on plate. Cheesecake for dessert I would not recommend. More of a moose and it seemed full of chemicals and I told waitress it was in my view, disgusting. I was almost reprimanded for eating it as much as I could but onus is on pub to focus on service and good food and not to make a guest uncomfortable. Lastly, I was surprised to see dogs inside where people are eating - I am a dog lover but think dogs should be welcomed in the garden area but not main eating area.
The Star has been taken over and my best friend is one of the partners. She is an absolute stickler for detail and first class service. I would encourage locals to give the new proprietors a chance to make their visit to The Star a much more enjoyable experience.
I totally disagree with the negative comments below. The Star has a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
I've always received a good service from the staff at the Star and the food is generally very good.
Out of the many times I've eaten there, I was rarely disappointed.
Completely agree with djs1979. The staff at The Star, Chester Road, have no idea about service or indeed running a pub.
I'm so upset about they way they have treated my dining party on a number of occasions I doubt I will even go in there for a drink again.
Every time I've eaten there the food has arrived separately for all the people eating. Even up to an hour apart!
Meaning half the table had to watch on hungrily while the others ate. And when the food did come for the others half of it was cold!
The Star Pub on chester road, totally know how to ruin the eating out experience. And the food is very expensive.
For the money you pay, there is no service and no apology.
Staff, particularly the owner, are rude and arrogant and act like they are doing you a favour allowing you in their pub.
I live on Chester Road and everyone in the area is starting to say the same thing about the place.
We were all pleased when The Star first opened and thought it would be lovely to have a nice pub in the area, turns out we were very wrong.
My advice would be don't go there ever. Even for a drink.
Unless you want to have arrogant bar staff look down their noses at you, if they even bother to serve you.
I would say the first review was written by the proprietor or the proprietor's marketing agency!
Have been to this pub around ten times now, four of which I have eaten at with friends. As a pub it is very good, however for food it is not. Appalling service from arrogant staff who clearly wish they weren't working in a pub have spoiled each of the meals I have had there. I believe in giving a place a chance, which is why I have been back for food more than twice... I would say drink yes, food no! After a unhelpful reaction to poor service on my last visit (October 2008) (the main courses for four people arrived fifteen minutes apart) I plan not to go back either for drinks or food.
Have friends in the area who have had similar experiences and also vowed not to go back!
Sorry 'Star', you held so much promise...
A lively place. Music was a little loud but would definitely return for the food.
