Never eat at this pub. I was offended and upset by the manager who aggressively and provocatively teared up a drinks bill in a very dramatic fashion, inches away from my friends face when we tried to discuss our problems with the food. She then marched out the room and slammed the kitchen door. We politely had mentioned that our food was late, came separately when we ordered together and that one dish was cold. We were both upset and it ruined our evening. What astonishingly bad behaviour. The manager behaved as if she was looking for a fight, not trying to deliver service. I will be taking up this issue with the owners.
My opinion is the same as the rest of these reviewers! - Nice food, diabolical service! Please sort this out and you will have an amazing pub!
The food in this place is great, but the service totally and utterly lets it down; it is indifferent at best. No smiles, no real greeting, and when a mistake was made by one of the waiters, we were made to feel like it was our fault and we were being a pain in the backside by just being there. It's a real shame as the food is really quite good.
A group of us (about 12) ate at the Stonehouse in the run up to Christmas. It's basically a gastropub with a focus on dinning.
Warm bar snacks on the bar is a nice touch, and the ales are ok (Doom bar always welcome).
Starters were a little slow in materialising but were nice, particularly my smoked haddock.
The problems arose with the main courses - we are part of a group that meets once a month and tries a different steak restaurant. so we all steak unsurprisingly - they arrived intermittently, with myself and a friend sharing the Chateaubriand, which arrived last. As my friend's steaks moved from hot to warm we asked them to start while we waited for the sides and some plates to server the Chateaubriand. We had to ask 3 times for some plates and twice for the sides. The plates arrives, the sides didn't. We gave up asking and ate the main courses without our side orders and cancelled them after a few of the guys had finished their steak before they had arrived.
We refrained from ordering desserts as it might have rolled into the new year. We left a tip as it was Christmas, it wasn't deserved.
Decent food (when it appears), really really bad service - some of the worst.
Went to The Stonhouse on Sunday for some celebratory drinks and food in the beer garden. I like the beer garden - a bit pokey, but a nice atmosphere. It was busy as the sun was out but there is enough seating out there. Unfortunately the service at The Stonhouse was awful. Not the seated service - the lady that cleared our tables and brought us our food was very pleasant, it was the service at the bar. We ordered a jug of Pimms (that they had advertised outside) and were met with a huff and a sigh from the man that served us. We then asked for a jug of water - another sigh. No smile, no please/thank you. When we went to pay off our tab at the end of the meal one of my friends politely enquired about our card being behind the bar and was responded to with a 'what? Yeah, what about it?' - when we then explained that we wanted to pay off our tab, and that our table number was xx, she was very rude and, again, huffed and puffed (it must be a Stonhouse staff trait) and said 'oh so you want to pay off your tab? Why didn't you just say so?' (umm. We did). A friend commented fairly loudly that she was rude and she actually managed a smile then as we were leaving. I know that it was busy, but come on! It's a shame - I currently run a bar and my first comment in there after grumpy man had served us was that if I was his manager and I saw him behaving like that to customers I'd sack him. On a plus point, the pork belly was delicious as was my friend's sausage and mash. Nice place - service, people, service!
Great food. RUBBISH service! Had to repeatedly ask for service after having been told we had 1.5 hours at the table, we had no problem with the 1.5 hours but were intending to eat during this time! I was poured the wrong wine, politely queried it as it was not the same as the first glass I had enjoyed and was told I was wrong by the bar tender. Another member of staff overheard, apologised for his colleagues rudeness and poured me a new glass. The maitre d' didn't even do us the courtesy of giving us the bill. Instead leaned over a table and threw it in our direction. When we said we did not want to pay the service charge she patronisingly said "oh did I neglect you?" I ate here 6 months ago and was really impressed. Not sure if they have new management but things have seriously gone downhill!
Really disappointed by the meal we had at the Stonhouse having heard some good things about it from friends.
4 of us went for Sunday Lunch and it was really busy but we were seated without too much of a wait.
Our server was friendly and the wine list was great with some lovely choices. Unfortunately the roast beef was not at all worth coming for - good meat but a paltry serving of 1 small roast potato, 1 piece of broccoli, 2 small carrots and 2 small parsnip slices.
Added to this was a yorkshire pudding/bun which was cooked appallingly and cold to boot.I was thoroughly hungry and sad at the end and my fellow diners felt the same.
Sticky toffee pudding was a surprise highlight at the end of a really sad sunday dinner.Try scoffers, the coach and horses or the Merchant instead if you're in the area for a good roast!
Highly recommend this gastropub, which has delicious food at reasonable prices and friendly, attentive service.
The ambience hits a nice mixture of a bit more special that the numerous eateries along Clapham High Street, without being too starchy or intimidating.
Booking is a good idea, particularly at weekends.
The food in this place is exceptional and the service always friendly - definitely the best place around Clapham High St in my opinion although it does get pretty busy so its best to book unless you want to drink at the bar for 15 mins (no harm in that!).
This lunchtime the Stonhouse refused to serve the guy who is painting my front room. He is middle-aged, Irish, hardworking, funny and nice. He was dressed in working clothes. Apparently someone who's spent his life painting other people's property isn't good enough to buy a drink at the Stonhouse.
A very friendly place, nice patio and good service. The food used to be fantastic, but since opening has gone down hill, I hope they can improve it back to the first class nosh it used to be.
My family and I went to The Stonehouse on Saturday for lunch. I had been in the evening before and had a nice meal. So as I had guests thought it was a good place to go.
Firstly, even with a child in tow we had to ask for a children's menu as the waitress didn't seem to notice. Then once we had ordered we then waited approx 45mins. After this time one of the group went to ask where or how long the food would be. It wasn't very busy there. The reply we got was "we had to go and catch the fish" by the barman. No apology. Returning to the table we decided to leave when out of no where all the food suddenly appeared as if by magic. Seeing we were leaving the same man who was at the bar who now had the food said to us it was only a 20 minute wait. We just left as we found this was really rude and at no point was an apology offered or common curtiousy shown. Oh and it had been 45 minutes and a man who looked like the manger (not sure if he was) was present the entire time but didn't seem to be aware of people waiting for food.
I would not recommend that you go there, unless they get some new staff.
Having heard good things about The Stonhouse, I had been meaning to go for a while - and it didn't disappoint! Went last Thursday and it was pretty busy and had a good vibe. It's smarter than your average pub, but the staff were very friendly and looked after us well.
I had a delicious manuka salmon pate to start, and cornish crab cakes, which were very fresh and surprisingly light. I had a fantastic steak (perfectly cooked and tender) and my girlfriend had the mussels, which she seemed very happy about! There's a good wine list - I recognised a couple of wines from another gastropub I go to a fair bit, and the prices here were cheaper. All in all, an excellent evening - will be back at The Stonhouse soon.
The Stonhouse is quite a posh affair and although it did feel a bit up itself, the food was really good as was the service. Prices not too bad I suppose, though there's some pricey wines that I think should be avoided. All in all though, The Stonhouse was a nice experience and probably one I'd like to have again.
