The Sun Inn is infinitely more interesting on the inside than its exterior might have you believe and it might just provide you with a shock or two.

The Venue
Located on Bethnal Green Road, The Sun Inn makes a bold attempt to change the ideas about the area’s pubs. The outside is clean and white and the pub’s badge beams with a golden gleam. Inside, there is William Morris style floral prints on the wallpaper that surrounds a cosy, squashed in space.

The walls also display modern pieces of art that look to have been gathered from local artists. These forays into another world of pub decor mark it out as an individual in these realms with only the Star of Bethnal Green (although in another league) doing a similar thing down the road. The seating is, however, a little slap dash with frayed edges and makeshift material covering small benches near the front window.

The Atmosphere
The Sun Inn doesn’t have an easy task in attracting drinkers to this region as most are sucked to the mixing bowl of Brick Lane. It does, however, provide a haven of taste and a semblance of style that make it comfortable and even a little creative.

Where tight jeans and tasselled loafers of the customers here would be castigated in most of the pubs on the road, they are free to exist below the tables in peace and freedom from persecution. Young locals also line the bar as they chat with the friendly staff.

The Drink
The Sun Inn sells a good range of wines by the glass or the bottle and there is a favourable selection of spirits behind the bar. Prices are competitive and this extends to the beers. Staropramen, Hoegaarden, Stella and Becks are all available on draught.

The Last Word
The Sun Inn flickers with ambition and with the help of the institution that is the Star of Bethnal Green a little way up the road, the two could be making this end of Bethnal Green Road more of a destination soon.
