The ViewLondon Review
This newly refurbished pub used to be a longstanding traditional venue but has since transformed into a chic, laid back bar that makes the best of old and new.The VenueThe conversion of The Sun from old fashioned to contemporary pub has created interest along Drury Lane. From the outside, the deep purple grabs your attention, but inside the style is simple and interesting. Exposed brick walls and polished wood floors sound simple enough, but a few surprises such as contrasting antique and modern light fixtures teamed with a random rush of colour on the stripy wall are a feast of visuals and the lines blur between rough and chic. The seating is similarly haphazard, with a few low seating tables, a couple of enclosed booths, and high stools dotted around to create a social atmosphere.
The AtmosphereThe Sun has yet to find its niche in the Covent Garden drinking scene, but already it’s popular with young office workers and relaxed regulars alike. There’s a friendly atmosphere, but the bar has yet to find its niche in the Covent Garden scene, so has a slightly odd ambience at times due to the range of customers; however, if variety is what you fancy then The Sun delivers. The cleanliness of the decor lends itself to refreshing vibe contrasting with the dark, moody pubs that many punters are used to.
The DrinkThe drinks list at The Sun is extremely basic, consisting of a few mainstream beers on tap with a simple selection of spirits lining the bar. The wine list is detailed but limited, but with bottles costing from as little as £11 there’s not too much to complain about in terms of price. Considering the cool, fresh look this redone pub is going for, there aren’t enough exciting choices on the menu with nothing special to entice new customers in. That said, the staple choices should keep the regulars pleased.
The Last WordThe Sun is a bit different from you’re average pub or bar, with a few interesting tweaks making it appealing to the eye whilst keeping it simple enough to make sure all customers feel welcome.
