The ViewLondon Review
The Telegraph is one of the oldest public houses in Brixton, with plenty in its history to brag about. It used to host the Clash back in the day and many a famous DJ has graced the decks, including Basement Jaxx and Marshall Jefferson. The VenueSituated on Brixton Hill between Brixton underground and Streatham Hill BR stations, The Telegraph is slightly tucked away but well worth the extra 10 minute bus ride from either station. With its image of posh leather sofas, spotlights and artwork, it attracts a young, trendy crowd. They open seven days a week, playing live music during the week with DJs at the weekends. Something that will please the smokers is they also have a large outdoor area at the front of the bar filled with benches so you wont have to go down some grim back alley when you need a quick puff!
The AtmosphereThe atmosphere is chilled and friendly, it has retained its local feel but not in a dowdy, cliquey way, more in a ‘we want to show everyone how great our bars are outside Central London’ kind of way. The doormen are polite but firm so you can be assured of no trouble and the bar staff are chatty, smiley but unfortunately rather slow, so have patience.
The MusicIt’s always been their plan to host a good mix of live music and top quality DJs spinning the decks in both the main club room and the lounge area, which is what makes The Telegraph a break from the norm, especially in South West London. The music is top quality with house on most Saturdays including nights like Dopamine Sessions, Shameful and Dirty Disco, all playing a mix of funky, jackin, electro and tech house. There are also reggae nights, live indie rock nights, and there’s often an afterparty thrown on a Sunday. As with most venues that play a good mix of music, it’s always best to check what’s on if you’re fussy - especially before trekking all the way to Brixton.
The DrinkThe drinks are where The Telegraph is let down. They don’t do cocktails, which is disappointing, the bar staff are very slow and serve drinks in plastic cups. When you finally get your drink its ok, single measures and post mixes don’t make the most sumptuous of alcoholic beverages but it is reasonably priced, so at least you can keep going back for more!
The Last WordMany say Brixton is becoming the new Shoreditch with its collection of newly refurbished bars, popular restaurants and easy transport links. The Telegraph definitely wouldn’t look out of place in Hoxton Square!
