The Terrace manages what many venues try and few succeed at – it’s a decent bar, restaurant and lounge that manages to keep each part of its whole separate but accessible.
The Venue
This trendy, sophisticated bar is located at the entrance to Centre Court Shopping Centre, a convenient spot for a bite to eat or a drink or two. Climbing two flights of stairs, it’s not very child friendly but this doesn’t seem to put of the legion of Yummy Mummies that frequent this venue for light refreshment in the bar, adjoining cafe or sophisticated restaurant. There is also a separate entrance via the shopping centre.
The space at The Terrace is impressive, with large potted palms, feature lighting and a beautiful domed ceiling. With designer-inspired Philippe Starke seating and vibrant colours there’s plenty to soak in. Outside is a narrow balcony for smirting; a great spot for a balmy summer's evening. At the weekends, there's an area designated for dancing, and with a resident DJ this venue fills its 300 capacity easily on a Friday or Saturday when it’s open until 2am.
The Atmosphere
There is a very Mediterranean feel at The Terrace and with modern jazz and salsa music playing it definitely gets you in the holiday vibe. A modern venue, it attracts young professionals, and with Asian and Oriental chefs in the kitchen, and with waiters buzzing around it all feels very Central London. The atmosphere is very dependent upon when you go, with a much clubbier, party-centric vibe when the DJ comes out to play. The eclectic nature of the venue doesn’t suffer, instead it succeeds in being a Jack of all Trades without sacrificing on quality.
The Food
The food menu is inspiring, the signature dish of sizzling fajitas with tortillas, salsa, cheese, guacamole and sour cream leaves the mouth watering in more ways than one and costs from £11.95.
On the whole, food is well priced and decent quality. Starters cost £5-£10 and include a garlic bread mezze, tempura, nachos and ceviche. Mains come in at around £10-£15 and include a wide range of dishes such as burgers, steaks, thai curries, pan fried salmon, tuna steak, prawns and lamb. You’ll be hard pushed not to find at least one dish to tempt you.
The Drink
Advertised as the main cocktail bar in Wimbledon, you will not be disappointed with the choice of alcoholic beverages, with premium cocktails and a selection called The Terrace Top Five – bespoke cocktails complete with an additional shot for just £8.95, make sure you line your stomach before venturing out. Recommended is the Knockout (mint, passion fruit, brown sugar, Havana rum and Chambord, served with an additional flaming shot) does exactly what it says on the tin. If you want something less potent then the Monococos (Stoli vanilla vodka, Baileys, creme de cacao, creme de menthe with vanilla ice cream and cookies, served with an additional Baileys shot) may be calorific, but it’s a delicious way to ease yourself into a heavy session.
A good selection of wines with seven whites and as many reds, well described and reasonably priced are also on offer, ranging from £12-£25, alongside four Champagnes (£43-£105). If you like your drink a little simpler then beers are available, with Grolsh, Carling and Heineken on tap for under £3.20.
The Last Word
The Terrace is a place to see and be seen. With an excellent restaurant and trendy bar, it's one of the best venues in central Wimbledon.
