The ViewLondon Review
A pub with an eventful history, The Three Lords is now a proper City boozer great for a pint and gassing with your mates.
The Venue
Named after three lords executed on Tower Hill for their part in the Jacobite Rebellion, the pub is now a more attractive proposition. As you approach, you’ll notice colourful hanging baskets of flowers outside the entrance as well as a spill over of patrons onto the pavement to the front and the side of the pub. Once through the door it’s a much darker affair inside.
The Three Lords is a small space, with plenty of dark wood and tall windows with heavy drapes. Most of the ground floor of the pub is allocated for standing, which is a good thing as it gets quite packed. The tall, broad bar dominates the room with its dark wood and slender brass supports. A large and colourful jukebox plays constantly in the background and pumps out a steady soundtrack of oldies hits. Downstairs, when open, you’ll find the Cellar Bar, which is often used for diners during the lunchtime rush and offers more in the way of seating.
The Atmosphere
The crowd at The Three Lords is older, mostly middle-aged and mainly men. In contrast, the attentive and cheerful staff are mostly young and female. This seems to appeal to the clientele. Patrons seem jovial and there is plenty of good hearted banter as they sink their pints. Empties are quickly collected and the pub’s business runs along quite smoothly. Free darts matches are a regular event here (just book in advance) and they often host live music.
The Food
Food is only served at lunchtime and includes jacket potatoes, burgers and sharing platters. Mains are of the sausage, egg and chips variety and prices are quite reasonable - you could happily spend a fiver and eat well.
The Drink
A Young’s pub, the beers on tap include Young’s Bitter, Young’s Special, Bombardier, Heineken, Fosters, Carling and Guinness plus Scrumpy Jack cider at an average price of £3.40 a pint. All your typical spirits are lined up for shots or highballs and the well-priced wine list has five whites and five reds - all available by the glass - and four bottles of Champagne for when the City boys are looking to celebrate.
The Last Word
The Three Lords is a proper little boozer – not too pretentious and nothing fancy, it offers good brews in The City.
