The ViewLondon Review
With a foreboding facade, The Tooke Arms isn’t the most luxurious of pubs but that doesn’t seem to affect its popularity. The VenueInhabiting a square box of a building, The Tooke Arms resembles an old-school working men’s club, with a long bar, plenty of space and very dated furnishings. There’s a small stage area, which is, in fact, a raised corner with glittering lights aimed apologetically. Old nets and curtains complete the look, a look that suggests somewhere to get drunk in as opposed to a place where you might want to while away your evening.
The AtmosphereDaytimes have a slightly depressing feel, full of old timers working their way through cheap pints and spirits, watching the same rolling news. Evenings get busier, especially at the weekend where karaoke and discos liven the old place up. A little. Most of the visitors to The Tooke Arms come from the nearby housing and they all seem to get on well, but newcomers might feel a little out of place – this feels like the kind of pub you get taken to, not one in which to drop by unannounced.
The DrinksThe lager staples such as Carling, Carlsberg and Kronenburg are about as exciting as the beers get, and although there’s a pritt-sticked poster showcasing the Champagnes on offer you get the impression they won’t run out anytime soon. The spirits go down a little quicker and offer good value, with a more than adequate range of bottled mixers.
The Last WordA haven for the less discerning locals, The Tooke Arms has some lively characters but newcomers might be advised to try elsewhere.
