The ViewLondon Review
The Two Brewers is the kind of pub that breeds contentment, a little like the feeling you get after a large Sunday Roast.
The Venue
The Two Brewers is located on Monmouth Street, a short distance from Seven Dials. It brims with sophisticated tradition and has its own special way of making you feel at home. The thick carpet underfoot and the dim orange lights are at just the right pitch to make it loungey and relaxing. The furniture is all of different origin and there's a good sense of history here. The walls are decorated with old pictures and, although this is utilised in many similar establishments, this pub has put some style and thought into the imagery.
The Atmosphere
The Two Brewers is a home away from home. Its soft furnishings lull you into a state of mind that feels like Christmas every day. The fire that sleeps in the corner doesn’t even have to be lit to warm the hearts of those inside. The people are a friendly bunch and there’s no need for a fire to thaw frosty looks here. Simple types head in after work and mix with the theatre crowd where strong scents of perfume linger and wine glasses are left stained with ruby red lipstick.
The bar staff are friendly and genuinely interested in you as well as your custom and it remains comfortably communal from the moment you enter until the moment you leave.
The Food
Packed full of classic pub food, the menu at Two Brewers is pleasing, if not original. There’s nothing wrong with the simplicity of cocktail sausages and dip, steak and chips and gammon and free-range eggs when they’re prepared with a little care in such a homely environment. Add specials like chicken and Portobello mushroom hotpot and it’s a place worth visiting for more than just a drink.
The Drink
The wine is a reasonable price here at £10.95 for a bottle and £2.95 a glass (house white and red) but there isn’t much choice. The lager is a bit better with Kronenbourg, Fosters and Becks Vier and the pricier Staropramen and Budvar to get a little excited about. The ale is served well and there’s usually a guest to accompany Sharps Doom Bar, Abbot Ale and London Pride.
The Last Word
Despite refusing to offer much in the way of alternatives to the rest of the pubs in the area, the Two Brewers seems to do everything well with its palatial living-room chic.
