The ViewLondon Review
A behemoth of booze, fruit machines and cheap dates on Edgware Road.
The Venue
At the bottom of Edgware Road, overlooking a busy junction, The Tyburn peers out like a gigantic office block stripped of its workers, replaced by drinkers and diners. Its huge facade goes up and up but the pub only covers the first floor of this modern-looking deity.
Inside, the decor is classic Wetherspoons - there is a lot of red on the walls, a large floral presence over the cosy-looking carpets and the look of a traditional pub is only punctured by the presence of armies of brown leather booths that gatecrash DFS style. Aiding the modern architecture of the leather booths is a collection of crystal spheres, which hang above the bar in a row of silver, and red light boxes mounted on the walls.
The Atmosphere
The cheap prices keep everyone happy and The Tyburn fits the Wetherspoons mould. Shoppers who arrive heavy handed at the foot of Oxford Street fill up the booths and the work crowd punctuates the clientele come 6pm. The lack of noise is a bit of a strain in this mammoth building, and during the day the presence of other conversations spilling into your own is a turn off that’s only helped by the silence.
Fruit machines and quiz games provide the entertainment but after one of many cheap beverages the conversation seems to become sufficiently lubricated. The staff are trained well and professional to the point of wishing you on your way, leaving you with a sense of having been well looked after.
The Food
The famous deals like the burger and beer offer are still gobbled up here, and there is Steak Club, Curry Club and roasts throughout the week. The menu features traditional British cuisine as well as a small range of vegetarian options. Prices are almost as reasonable as the drinks.
The Drink
Wetherspoons bases its whole ethos on providing good value and as the Tesco of the pub world, it does so consistently well. There are deals on a whole bunch of spirits and mixers and you’re encouraged to go double for the real savings.
The bar stocks some offbeat brands to go with the more familiar spirit labels and regularly holds wine, whisky, lager and ale festivals throughout the year. Amongst the lagers on draught are Fosters, Becks and Kronenbourg as well as rotating ales that give a good account of the more interesting produce around.
The Last Word
The Tyburn may look part office block, part skyscraper, but once inside it treats you well and is a good place to enjoy all of the perks that Wetherspoons brings.
