I stayed at the hotel opposite for 4 days before I dropped into this gastropub. I had a steak which was beautifully cooked and very cheap for London. I came back every day for the remainder of my stay in London, the host Serdar was warm and welcoming and I had fantastic service. The Union is now a home from home for future trips to the big smoke!
Moved into our new office, and did the classic wander in search of lunch, after the first pub didn't do food, they told to go to Union Tavern, and on getting there saw bottles of wine already on each table, smart lay out, also lunch was on the directors pocket, we marched in! The place has a lot of its original features, with Church pews for some of the tables, and a open kitchen, which is always reassuring. For the 2nd time within a week I spotted scotch egg, and for the 2nd time, a I had a damn fine scotch egg, nothing like the terrible ones of my youth! Mains was pork cordon bleu, all the food disappeared quickly and then realised i had missed breakfast! The price was only £7:90, which our director loved! Also noticed they do Sunday roast.........
Visited the pub on Sunday 10 February 2008. It's an attractive place, with friendly, young bar staff. The food, however, was very disappointing. I had a goat's cheese salad, which was meant to come with 'garlic toasts'. My grilled (or baked) goat's cheese came with no more than two small pieces of bread which didn't taste as if they had ever come into contact with garlic. And that was it. For a main course. Oh, I forgot - there were the ubiquitous green leaves underneath, which fill the plate wonderfully. And cost almost nothing. They were soaked in dressing. Hugely disappointing. This was preceded by the most watery vegetable soup I have ever tasted. My friend had an average Sunday beef roast. The deserts were fairly nice - they were the highpoint of the meal. Really quite disappointing, especially when we paid £37 for the whole lot. We won't be going back.
What a pleasant surprise. The open kitchen at The Union Tavern inside this traditional looking pub puts it well above the usual pub atmosphere. It was friendly, candle lit and homey feeling. When the menu is as great sounding as this one is, how do you choose what to eat? Because I couldn't decide, I opted to assemble a smorgasborg of starters and sides into a meal.
Although the mash was below average (perhaps from a box), the scallops more than made up for it. They were meatily generous and well seared and the side salad was perfectly drizzled over with the dressing. My companion's leek and potato soup was hot and fresh and he enjoyed his hamburger which was medium to well done and very juicy, but a bit small for the bun.
The only downside might be that The Union Tavern is a little pricey for a pub.
For one week I attended an IT technical training course in the centre of London in April 2004. The activity required a lot of mental and physical resourses.
Therefore it was imperative to recuperate through good food and pleasant and high spirited company. I found both beyond my comprehension when I enjoyed all my meals in The Union Tavern.
Thanks to everybody. Hope to see you again.
