I have lived in Greenwich for 6 years and am yet to find another pub as friendly. It does loads of different beers and has a good wine list, the landlady and core staff are really welcoming. Yes it is a family friendly pub (which I am grateful for) although kids are not allowed in the bar and most parents clear out around 7 - 8.
The food is really good, I have been cheeky and ordered off menu and they have sorted me out with no problems!
Ok The marquee frame needs a bit of love, but the restaurant, bar and garden are all really well maintained and are just on the right side of trendy! Living in Greenwich means you either get tourist hell in the centre or very questionable paitrons in the rest, the Vanbrugh manages to avoid both.

A very warm welcome awaits you at The Vanbrugh in Colomb Street, Royal Borough of Greenwich. The bar and waiting staff are very friendly and the atmosphere of the pub is the same as well as a relaxed feel about the place. All the bar seating area is characteristic in that odd tables and chairs amble amongst the relaxing chesterfields situated to the rear of the pub. The food is absolutely delicious, I have dined at The Vanbrugh on many occasions now and even take my clients there at Christmas time who in turn have now taken their clients! All are welcome at The Vanbrugh from weekday business lunches to socialising with friends to taking your family out at the weekend - whatever the occasion The Vanbrugh definitely pulls out all the stops to make your visit as pleasant as possible.

The Vanbrugh ticks all the boxes for me. A good selection of beers (only two real ales, but good ones, and a great selection of lagers) and wine; great food with all you'd expect on a menu and more (the Vanbrugh Burger is especially good); sport on tvs and a big projector screen for big match day; and good humoured and approachable staff all packaged in a great space offering a bar area, a restaurant, a marquee and a garden. It is unashamedly family friendly (and yes I have two toddlers) but kids are generally excluded from the bar area and tend to converge on the marquee. You'll also find there are peak kid times but these are few and very rare in the evenings. Mondays they have a great quiz, evenings the atmosphere is friendly and fun. It's a shame that the full garden area is not available (a long running issue with usage) but there are plenty of tables, many under the cover of vines which makes it very picturesque when covered in grapes. All in all a cracking place and well worth the walk through the park from central Greenwich.

"Greenwich's Best Kept Secret" Well I certainly shaln't be telling anyone to go there.Ruined our Sunday. One vaguely attentive member of staff. Another with most of his backside showing while he served food. Nice.Food was of such poor quality I couldn't believe that the kitchen was featured so prominently. I still feel like I'm chewing the lamb. Potatoes were cooked the day before.Freezing cold. Full of a combination of men watching football; and sofa's littered with babies while parents nursed one drink all afternoon.The brewery won't allow them to serve Greenwich Meantime beer. (!!!)Experience actually put me off Greenwich.One plus point was that landlady valiantly tried to keep everyone happy.

I have been wanting to go for a Sunday Roast at The Vanbrugh for quite some time, so thought a cold Sunday would be a perfect time to try.

We were pleased to be seated in the restaurant by the radiator as it was such a chilly day but found that it wasn't on which was disappointing. The food, I must say was pretty good, lovely, nicely cooked lamb though slightly undercooked carrots. Unfortunately, the lunch was spoilt as it was uncomfortably cold, not only in the restaurant (one of the waiters was wearing a scarf!) but in the bar and in the marquee also.

In the marquee that is attached to the pub as a permanent fixture, there was water dripping down the brick wall and a few very large holes in the marquee 'wall' which could have been repaired easily but the whole place looked quite badly looked after so it was no surprise it had been left.

Suffice to say, paying £40 for a one course lunch and a couple of drinks each was not money well spent but, had it been warm in there it would have been. I suggest to anyone who is thinking of going there to wrap up very warm and maybe take a blanket, or to wait until the sun is out and make use of the pleasant garden.

After moving to the area and having The Vanbrugh as my nearest local, I was keen to check it out and support the local pub.

The first time I went the service was not particularly welcoming and slightly indifferent though the menu had a nice range of food, the interior is furnished really well and the food served was fine.

I thought I'd give it another go and took a couple of friends there for the Sunday roast. Unfortunately, the service was again not particularly welcoming and this time indifferent and at times dismissive. We ordered the slightly pricey roast lamb which was actually really nice but it was'nt until it was brought to us that we were informed that they had run out of mint sauce. When asked how the meal was and saying that it was good apart from no mint sauce we were told it was because they had been so busy (though you'd think for such a basic but necessary condiment they would have a reasonable stock of it). If we'd known beforehand we probably would have ordered a different type of roast. When we then went to order crumble we were also told they had run out and overall the lack of friendliness and manner of the waitress was disappointing.

It would be better if you could get the the lawn/garden out the back of the pub which is behind a wooden gated fence, but unfortunately you cant at the moment, apparently due to planning permission problems.

Lastly, unless you want to be surrounded by yummy mummies and daddies with their babies talking about babies, n*pples, br*stfeeding and puke, then I'd avoid going there on a Sunday afternoon when it's busy (or perhaps look out for the large crowd with prams and mini-me's and make sure you try and find another table elsewhere in the pub).

The Vanbrugh tout themselves as the best kept secret in Greenwich, but reading the reviews I think the best kept secret is that it's not that amazing.

The Vanbrugh is one of the most wonderful pub / restaurants in London. The interior decor has been carefully and tastefully considered. The food is superb; the excellent chef delivers a superb menu of food that caters for even the most discerning diner. The atmosphere and service are also of the highest standard making this a truly remarkable place to have a meal or just a drink. I highly recommend it.

Haven't been here for a long time. Thoroughly impressed. The Restaurant has had a make over. The food was excellent, as was the service. Look forward to our next visit.
