The ViewLondon Review
A nice break from the hustle and bustle of Walthamstow, The Village offers a warm, simple pub with a heart. But check if there's a quiz on - you might want to grab seats before the masses descend.
The Venue
Tucked away in what can only be described as the nicest part of Walthamstow, this pub takes its name from the village, an area far, far away from the manic street market and busy bus station. There are one or two pubs nearby but, unless you want to venture a little further to the trendy Castle, it's The Village you want for a quiet drink. Inside and out it’s a traditional pub with a modern twist. An old bookcase, black and white photos, quiz machines and faux gas lamps meet wrapping-paper-patterned walls and comfy mix and match furniture. It’s bigger than it first looks and there’s a long bar with plenty of staff. The large beer garden is great for losing track of time on a summer afternoon.
The Atmosphere
Because of its distance from the station, The Village generally only attracts locals, young and old. There’s no pretension, just a simple, friendly pub. It gets busy at weekends, particularly Sunday lunch time, and you’ll be lucky to find a seat if you turn up on a Tuesday pub quiz night. There’s the feeling the everyone knows each other, but new arrivals are very welcome! Staff are helpful and knowledgeable, and as there are often more staff than necessary on duty, they’ll always stop for a chat.
The Food
The food is fairly typical of a pub like this. Tasty beer battered fish and chips, wholetail scampi, and a steak, ale and vegetable casserole, all for £7.95 each. They do a nice Sunday lunch with all the trimmings for £8.95, too, with meat supplied by the butcher next door.
The Drink
You'll probably find what you want at The Village, assuming you're not after a mojito. On draught, there’s Fosters, Amstel, Scrumpy Jack, Guinness and Adnams among others, with Corona, Heineken, Budvar and Becks by the bottle. And you'll get a tasty house wine for just £3 a glass - not bad for the posh part of town.
The Last Word
The type of pub where, eventually, everyone will know your name. If you live nearby, this will almost certainly become a favourite.
