After being a way for a while, i popped in for a quick drink to find it warmer, friendlier and more inviting. After speaking to, who I thought were the bar staff, they tell me that they were the new managers and have taken over the pub. They've, so far, done a great job, small changes, big impacting ones. You can tell that they really care about the place. I would definitely recommend checking out the place. You'll feel extremely welcomed. Also, their pizzas aint half bad either. I'll be back for sure.
I've been coming to the village since I moved to Muswell Hill a couple of years ago. I always love coming here, especially in the last couple of months the place has made a few changes. The buzzers (Which I actually thought were a good idea, especially during busy times to stop your food getting cold) have gone and your food is delivered to your table by the bar team. The pizzas are in my opinion the best on the broadway, and with 2 for 1 Pizzas every night it's the only place I'll go to if I want a Pizza. And they have also extended their 2 for 1 cocktail deal so that it is now on a Friday from 4 till 8 as well as all day on a Thursday.
They have great offers and the bar team have always been friendly. Definitely recommended!
I visited the village on bank holiday for lunch. The place opens at 12, and we arrived at 1pm.
The first impression was the smell. It smelt like a 'weatherspoons', as if the night before was full of drunks spilling there beer.
The place was quite depressing generally, with no music and hardly any staff.
We made an order for food, 3 pizza's and a salad with chicken. The restuarant takes orders at the bar as per usual, but rather than bring the food to the table i was surprised by being given a 'buzzer' to take to my table which would inform me when the food was ready to collect from the kitchen. A little waiter service wouldn't go amiss here.
On collection of the food from the kitchen, with our vibrating buzzer, the 'chef' (suspicious looking individual) was rude because we left our buzzer on the bar, and told us we are meant to give it to him, before sucking his teeth in a rude manner. Sorry for not knowing the system chef!
No knives and forks were available, so we had to ask and wait for the cutlery area to be replenished, and the salad didn't have chicken in it, which was requested when ordering. I informed the staff, only to be told that i didn't order chicken, which i know i did. Not many people eat a green leaf salad on its own!
The pizza was nice, but the crusts were inedible, far too hard and crunchy. Stone baked fire oven pizza's are not meant to be quite so tough.
The 'Guinness Extra Cold' wasn't extra cold, the waitress didn't know what a large glass of Zinfandel was, so i had to tell her, and the bottled mineral water doesn't live in a fridge.
Overall i find that The Village is trying to be a trendy modern bar offering food, but my experience was with staff that didn't know what they were doing, a rude chef and not a pleasant place to be.
Id recommend making your own judgements on this place, as even the professional reviews seem to overrate the experience.
I've just moved to Muswell Hill and this is now my regular drinking hole. It always has something going.
It shows major sport games on their plasmas or projector, but as the bar is large enough to split between football and music, it does, which is great for the girlfriends who just wanna drink.
A large outdoor area, with seating and heaters, great pizzas, great food and drink offers everyday and open till 2am with a DJ on the weekends, which gets very lively as it's free entry and it's where everyone goes on the weekend.
If you want proper pub grub then The Village Inn is probably the best place in the area. It’s a fairly simple joint with a great Irish couple running it who always make you feel welcome.
I’ve had enough of pretentious London bars and clubs so The Village Inn is perfect for me!
The Village is a retro chav pub. It is full of unemployed actors who think they are going to be the next big thing in Hollywood and are well and truly up their own rear end! Both the decor and the lighting make for a pub thats very harsh on the eyes. The Village is well worth the free entry fee - cheaper than the Zoo but just as educational as you can see how far (or not in some cases) evolution has come!
This is where Muswell Hill's youth meets on a Saturday night before getting down to the serious clubbing after closing time. Noisy and bustling. Just the thing if that's the thing you're looking for.
