The ViewLondon Review
One of the last standing traditional pubs in Muswell Hill, The Well caters for a very niche market – unfortunately, it’s a little too niche and most people will be hard pushed find much to like about this place. The VenueThe Well is located at the top of Muswell Hill Broadway, towards the roundabout. From the outside it looks like an old man pub - and the inside doesn’t disappoint. Most of the clientele are old men on their own watching the horses on the flat screen telly as they consume enough alcohol to fuel a rocket.
The pub is of an average size with the main drinking area lying to the right of the front doors. Here you will find several tables, all with the chairs pointed at the flatscreen TV hanging on the wall. A little cove-like private area nestles in the corner for those who like their privacy or want to hide away from the rest of the drinkers. Take heed, however, as the smell gives the impression that it has also doubled-up as a toilet on a few occasions. Opposite the toilet-like cove is a pool table where £1.50 will see you a single game.
Those that like their darts will be happy to hear that a dartboard lies in a nook at the far end of the bar, and you won’t miss the sports as a small TV keeps the game covered. The carpet lining the floor is the usual for a pub of this calibre - fitted in the seventies with strange shapes and dark red, green and brown colours. The chairs and tables are nothing aesthetically outstanding either, just made of your usual dark woods.
The AtmosphereThe barmaid is very friendly and has your best interests at heart. Otherwise, unless you’re in your sixties or you’ve taken to drinking to drown your sorrows whilst gambling your money on the horses in the desperate hope that you’ll win millions, you could do a lot better than The Well. That said, all this pub really needs is a lick of paint and maybe a bit of air freshener to remove the toilet-like odour that lingers so heavily and it could be a nice venue.
The FoodGrub is cheap. Very cheap. For £3.95 you can have yourself a burger and chips.
The DrinkOn tap you’ll find Green King IPA, Carling, Fosters, Guinness, John Smiths, Strongbow, Amstel, Heineken and Kronenberg. Unfortunately, you won’t find any real ales; however, drinks are extremely cheap at an average £2.75 a pint, with Carlsberg costing just £2.05.
The Last WordThe Well is definitely not the place to bring your girlfriend if you want to impress her and with so many better quality alternatives in Muswell Hill there really is no reason to come to this pub at all (unless you fancy a game of darts).
