The ViewLondon Review
The Wheatsheaf is a pleasant pub in a residential part of Ealing. It won’t win any awards for originality but they do care about their Fuller's ales and keeping sports fans happy – always two big ticks in the boxes of any pub.
The Venue
The Wheatsheaf cuts an impressive figure on the rather quiet road on which it resides. The large brick building is very pretty, helped along nicely by hanging foliage, Victorian-style lamps and a bold gold sign. Inside, the pub is much like any one of hundreds of boozers across the capital. Wooden tables, wooden chairs, wooden floors, a big bar laden down by draught pumps... You know the drill. However, it does stand apart thanks to several large screen TVs, well placed so more people can watch the all-important games. There’s even a small space to the side of the building for alfresco drinking, although it’s mainly reserved for smokers. However, it is worth seeking out a room tucked away to the back of the space with an original beamed ceiling and a huge open fireplace, although it’s purely ornamental now, which is a real shame.
The Atmosphere
Located away from the main thoroughfare of Ealing, The Wheatsheaf mainly attracts locals. The staff – although they can be rather surly to newcomers – seem to enjoy the banter with punters who have gone on to become friends, creating a genuine warmth in the pub. When a game is on the atmosphere edges up a notch or five, but the rest of the time it’s a laid back affair. If you get bored then seek out the board games for a bit of fun. Wild.
The Drink
Fuller's beer on tap really flies the flag for real ale at The Wheatsheaf, so it’s lucky they’re a well-respected brewery as if you’re not a fan of Fullers then it’s just lager for you. London Pride, ESB, Fullers and Discovery sit alongside a rotating tap so the regulars don’t get bored with the choice. And with CAMRA offering them their full support, it’s hard to find much to complain about on that front.
The Last Word
The Wheatsheaf is a decent pub and flies the flag for Fuller's. It may not win any awards for originality, but then who needs originality when all you want is a decent pint?
