The ViewLondon Review
If you don’t usually venture south of the river, the White Hart might just tempt you. This gastropub is worth a visit for its top quality food and cosy environment. The VenueThe decor is slightly unimaginative, being all wooden with many tables, but that does not detract from its warm, welcoming atmosphere. It is definitely more of a place to dine rather than have a drink, as there are many tables giving the impression of a restaurant rather than a pub. Their free Wi-Fi facility means that business people can work and relax simultaneously. The upstairs bar shows all major sports events, which means that the downstairs maintains its quieter ambience.
The AtmosphereTypically, there are media and trendy types who come here, but that does not affect the tone of the place in any way. The low lights and candles add to its laid back attitude. However, this is place for a decent, good quality feed and is suitable for couples and people wanting to unwind after work. The bar staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and when asked they are happy to recommend dishes and wines.
The FoodThe food, at first glance, looks typically gastropub in style but it comes with a twist. Starters begin at £5 and have a range of meat and vegetarian dishes. The antipasti is particularly good with a great blend of meats, bread and buffalo mozzarella. It is well known for its Argentinean steaks, which are definitely a must when dining here. They start at £12 for an 8oz rib eye and go up to £15 for an 11oz sirloin. A favourite of the White Hart is the banoffee pie, which is extremely popular with other diners. It manages to be a light, not too sugary but incredibly delicious dessert and would satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth.
The DrinkThe wine list is full and extensive spanning Europe and the New World. A bottle of the house red or white starts at a reasonable £11.65. Notably the house red is of an extremely good quality. The beer selection has the usual suspects for a gastropub, with two ales on tap - Bombardier and Timothy Taylor. Interestingly, there is a small but varied selection of organic fruit juices by Chegworth Valley, which taste as close to the fruit as possible, with no added sugars or additives. The cocktail list is small but diverse in selection, starting at £5. The elderflower Champagne is especially good and had a cucumber vodka infused in it.
The Last WordThe White Hart has good quality food and staff that know the origins of all the dishes. This makes for a pleasant and reassuring experience. If you don’t go to South London often, this is definitely a reason to visit.
