The ViewLondon Review
The Windmill is like a traditional British theme pub, yet beneath its masquerading crust the filling is all real.
The Venue
Located near Saville Row, The Windmill is an archetypal lounge pub that has decided to go big on traditional.
The pub comprises a vast space, complete with all the trimmings - the tables are glossy and identical and the seats are plentiful. Below your feet you’ll find the mushy spring of the floral carpeted floor. Above the bar itself is a series of stained glass windows. The historical photos that hang on the wall are quite interesting to peer at and they are everywhere.
The Atmosphere
Seeing as those that populate the area here are probably more likely to look for something a little more chic, there’s no surprise that The Windmill feels fairly deserted during the day. Lunchtimes are busy, however, and the after work crowd does tend to gather.
Exactly who are the after work crowd here? It’s difficult to tell the office workers and the shop types apart because the local stores are all of the calibre that requires their staff to dress formally so everybody ends up looking the same. What you do get is a very smart mix of old and young. The staff offer the kind of service you’d expect in a village local and add the personal touch of general chitchat.
The Food
The Windmill holds its pies in high regard. These are the crusty enticers that call people in. There is fish pie, two types of steak pie and tarragon among the choices and each costs around £9.50. As well as pies, there’s a posh pub grub menu of expensive-looking sandwiches and main meals that feature good quality ingredients.
The Drink
The Young’s brewery range is on offer here, including their selection of bitters, while lagers on draught include Kronenbourg, Fosters and Heineken.
The Last Word
The Windmill can come across as a little stuffy but for pie lovers out there it should be given a chance to impress. If you’re in search of good simple food then drift here.
