Yorkshire Grey is a fine little pub in Holborn, which won’t strike you with any original concepts but does possess a lively entertainment mix, a generous selection of ales and bitters and boasts such curious treats as ostrich burger on the food menu.

The Venue
The Yorkshire Grey is not expansive but its humble decor retains a community spirit despite being in the heart of the city. A large screen television for sport and, somewhat bizarrely, films dominates one end of the room while a number of benches, stools and tables fills the rest of the space. There’s no uniform for the staff meaning your bartender could be a student wearing a trendy scarf and your waitress might be wishing to impress with a sumptuous ball gown, but this adds to the human touch of the Yorkshire Grey.

The Atmosphere
A pub with character will ultimately attract pub characters and Yorkshire Grey has them on both sides of the bar. There is a disregard for bland pop music over the in-house speakers, with alternative funk as a surprising and welcome replacement, and the changing chalkboard outside will alert you to nights of the singles, quiz, poetry and DJ variety.

The Drink
Yorkshire Grey has a considerable and reasonably-priced cocktail menu with an array of sparklers, shooters, martini concoctions, long drinks and Latin-based classics. The wine list is also impressive and good value. In addition, beers like Deuchars, Bombardier, London Pride and Spitfire are all on draught. There is a modest restaurant upstairs, but you can grab bar food downstairs and experience some traditionally generous portions, including the old pub classic - the unmanageable burger in a regular sized bap combo.

The Last Word
While the colourful evening events may not be to the taste of someone who just wants a quiet pint, Yorkshire Grey certainly maintains warmth and charm, albeit in small doses.
