What a disgrace of a place! Dirty tables upstairs, rude host (owner?), lousy 3rd class act of a female jazz singer, substandard and overpriced house wine and we were refused any food at 11.02pm as the kitchen closes at 11!! Seriously, you're better off going to a local MacDonald's. Avoid Toulouse Lautrec at all costs!
My partner and I booked for a bite to eat and music in the jazz bar upstairs. Although we were told they weren't able to take our booking with our offer voucher (not the first or the last time), we decided to book anyway.
The staff weren't particularly attentive, the waitress didn't know any of the items that come on a simple platter. Neither was she knowledgeable about the rest of the very short menu nor did she understand what I was talking about when I ordered the red wine which was the special.
Prior to food arriving our cutlery was thrown on our tiny table and that left no space for the food.
When it did arrive it was a real hassle to get everything on the table.
seafood platter was unimaginative, snails were ok but the belly of pork was good if not a bit small.
There are some good wines on the wine list and non of them overpriced.
The music is the best thing about this eccentric venue and the reason I considered to return to this place.
Eating in the restaurant downstairs is the better option, although if the bar food is anything to go by it will be an average experience.
Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec is probably one of the best restaurants to go to. This is my thrid visit at the brasserie. We were always welcomed with open arms. I am new to the area and proud that I made the right move. The brasserie holds this unique french charm, maybe its the food, the service, the live music or the french speaking waitresses. Whatever it is the combination of all these made the experience warm unlike many contemporary restaurant where you feel unwelcomed.
I had tried a few dishes already so far the cote de boeuf for 2 was wonderfully cooked to perfection. The lamb was my partners favourite dish as it was cooked for 24 hours. I sometimes wonder how it becomes so tender. I have to admit although all of the dishes I tried looked and tasted delicious, I find the menu somewhat limited in fish options. As for dessert the choc fondant is to die for with white chocolate ice cream.
Every evening there is live jazz music in the wine bar on the 1st floor, this is great for me and my wife to enjoy a night out with a hearty meal after a hard days work. The smoking terrace is another bonus as well are the victorian style toilets. Our next visit might be in the private dining room where there is no hire fee apparently.
I have visited the Lautrec for dinner several times, and each time the food has been great (particularly the slow roasted lamb), service attentive and atmosphere relaxed.
We enjoy having coffee upstairs and I go there to use the wi-fi and something to eat and drink during the day.
My only complaint is that the upstairs music is amplified too much when the room is quiet.
This is an unusual little place run by three very young chaps having a good stab at running a restaurant/bar.
They don't alway get it right - it's a bit pricey for the mixed quality (food came cold once) and slightly amaterish/confused service but you can't knock their enthusiasm.
I hope they sort all out - worth a try but be relaxed about things and enjoy the singer upstairs.
