The ViewLondon Review
Town of Ramsgate is a sliver of a bar on the quiet and atmospheric Wapping High Street.
The Venue
Inside, Town of Ramsgate is a long, narrow rectangle with a dark wooden bar along one side. Plenty of windows keep the interior bright and knackered tables and a scattering of etchings and prints keep everything casual. Hurricane lanterns hang from the ceiling offering a soft light.
Outside is a Thameside patio. Whilst narrow, it is terraced to offer as many people as possible a water view. The smell in the air and the occasional sound of the slapping water remind you of your riverside nest.
The Atmosphere
Inside is blissfully quiet with a mature local crowd of mostly suits - either neighbouring office workers or residents popping into their local. The staff at Town of Ramsgate are friendly, greeting this person by name and asking that one about their holiday. Clearly they care and the patrons show affection for them. On a sunny day, locals crowd onto the patio space to enjoy alfresco boozing and merriment.
The Food
Daily specials mix things up and feature fresh, seasonal ingredients. The Town of Ramsgate main menu has all your old pub favourites - sandwiches, burgers, bangers and mash, and other pub classics at very reasonable prices.
The Drink
Oxford Gold, Doom Bar (Sharps), Bulmers, Peroni, Becks and Hoegaarden are intriguing draught choices and the bar staff know how to pull a proper pint. Pints are favourably priced. There is a short but pleasing selection of wines by the glass or bottle and plenty of spirits for cocktails and shots.
The Last Word
We sometimes forget about the Thames but an afternoon spent by her shores with a nice pint in hand goes a long way towards helping you forget about your urban angst. Visit the Town of Ramsgate for a slice of the real thing.
