The ViewLondon Review
A little piece of Greenwich history – complete with tourists. The VenueWant to find somewhere to drink the pain away whilst watching the Thames ebb and flow? You’re in luck. A five minute walk along the grey river from Greenwich Town Centre, the best aspect of this pub is undoubtedly the view from the windows almost touching the Thames. The ground floor is split between drinking (bar) and eating (restaurant) and upstairs is a function room, often filled with wedding parties. What’s on the walls? You’re in Greenwich, it’s called The Trafalgar Tavern, what do you expect? A clue: not Banksy.
The AtmosphereNot as melancholic as an extended contemplation of the Thames eternal tide might provoke. But no rollicking party either. Half tourists, half locals, you’ll have to get up early to snatch one of the window tables. It’s too large and too full of transients to foster a striking atmosphere, but the views of the river more than make up for these shortcomings.
The FoodAlthough there’s a restaurant, you can munch the decent food in the bar. It’s famed for its whitebait (caught in the Thames), but the food is slightly overpriced for a place that sets itself up as more than just a boozer. This used to be considered a premier eating spot for Greenwich. That must have been a while back. The bar staff are friendly sorts, if a little slow at delivering the food.
The DrinkThe drink is priced as you’d expect in a pub that attracts tornadoes of tourists. If you’re a member of CAMRA, you’ll probably be disappointed at the range of beers. It’s the species of pub in which you’d probably expect a better selection. There’s lager. There’s bitter. It’s all slightly expensive.
The Last WordGo once, for the views. If you really like the Thames, go twice.
