The ViewLondon Review

The Aussie chain has lost any of its ‘awesome spirit’ in this Croydon branch, leaving just a bland club with mediocre music and a lacklustre atmosphere.

The Venue
Situated opposite a KFC, it’s not exactly the classiest joint in town so expectations aren’t very high. Once you step beyond the moody bouncers you’ll be met with… nothing interesting at all. There are two rooms playing different music, two bar areas and a comfy seating area. It may sound like it ticks all the boxes but the place lacks any hint of character making all these things desperately boring. The whole club is decked out in monotonous wood, and the only vibrancy comes from garish wide screens either showing sport or texts from punters, which can be funny but quickly become lame.

The Atmosphere
On Friday and Saturday night, Walkabout is always crammed full of drunken eighteen-to-thirties looking to get yet more wasted and possibly ‘get off with someone’ (no exaggeration). If you’re going out with a big group of friends then you’ll enjoy the company and still have a laugh, but this isn’t the place to mingle with randoms. Pervy guys will feel up girls without fail, especially in the club room where you’re herded onto a tiny dancefloor to boogy next to lots of sweaty bodies to the sounds of commercial dance music. Joy. The other room offers a bit more fun, with pop and rock tunes playing and more room to dance, but there’s no cohesive atmosphere, just drunken people being drunk (which of course is fine when you’re drunk, too).

The Drink
Cocktails for £3.50 anyone? It’s easy to keep the drinks flowing if you can stand the painful wait at the bar for service. Most of the cocktails are classics like Sex on the Beach and Long Island Ice Tea but with random words like Tasmania and Bondi thrown in to make them sound more Australian. They taste fine for what you pay, but the strong shooters are preferred by most as they’ll knock you sideways for only £2. The pitchers for £7.50 are great value for money and a good way to get your crowd in the party mood quickly.

The Last Word
Dull music, dull crowd and dull place. Yet, unfortunately, this is one of the few clubs Croydon has to offer so if you’re in town, odds are you’ll end up here.
