The ViewLondon Review
Tucked down a small side street, Walkers of Whitehall is one of Trafalgar Square’s best-kept secrets. Offering hearty, home-cooked food alongside an extensive range of wines and beers, Walkers is the perfect escape from one of London’s busiest locations.
The Venue
A small black sign is the only indication from the main road as to where Walkers of Whitehall is hidden, but if you know what you’re looking for, it’s not hard to find. Soft, glowing lights shine through the windows and as you enter the building, you’ll feel right at home. The bar is on street level, with casual seating and a well-stocked bar. Downstairs you will find the comfortable restaurant and a further bar area.
The Atmosphere
Friendly, unobtrusive staff are welcoming and helpful, and the wooden floors, plush booth-style restaurant seating and deco-style wallpaper makes for a relaxing setting. This building used to be a bank and the restaurant is down in the old vaults, so you can happily while away the hours without knowing (or caring) what the weather may be doing outside. The interior offers plenty of space, so you’re unlikely to feel packed in, even on busy nights.
The Food
Food ranges from freshly prepared organic baguettes (from £4.95) and sharing platters (from £7.75) to traditional pub-style mains and daily specials. Butcher’s sausages and mash (£7.95) hit the spot with fat, juicy sausages, creamy chive mash and a delicious onion gravy, while pie of the day (£8.25) changes regularly and could be something like steak and ale, fisherman’s or lamb and mint. The succulent, melt-in-the-mouth lamb with a tangy mint sauce and crumbly pastry is sure to put a smile on your face.
The Drink
Plenty of the wines are available by the glass, starting at £3.35 for a 125ml measure and £4.40 for 175ml. Bottles start at just £12.95 with varieties from Italy, Spain and France all making an appearance on the menu. A pint of London Pride will cost you £3.20, with draught lagers including Carling and Staropramen also available, and bottled beers start from £3.40. You’ll also find a good range of spirits and a small selection of champagnes.
The Last Word
Right in the heart of London, Walkers of Whitehall will welcome you with open arms if you take the time to seek it out. And who knows, with its close proximity to 10 Downing Street, you may even catch high-flying politicians enjoying a pint or two.
