A great pub located amongst the offices at the end of Monument Street, Walrus and Carpenter is a popular haunt for those working in and around Monument.

The Venue
Surrounded by offices, Walrus and Carpenter is a great stop-off for a working lunch or an after work beverage with your colleagues. There are three entrances, the largest of which will send you down a dark flight of stairs to the Champagne cellar bar. The other two take you into the main pub area, which is traditional through and through: filled with dark woods, large medieval looking lights, and old pictures hanging on the walls.

No section of the bar has gone to waste as taps and draughts run across the whole worktop so you should find a drink to your liking. The wines and Champagnes are neatly perched behind the bar on a large gothic-like shelf with their names and prices annotated to the relevant ledge. The seating area forms an L-shape around the bar and offers up a decent amount of table space. At the end of the bar are a couple of games machines and a flight of stairs at the top of which is a dining area with table service for those who have come exclusively for the food.

The Atmosphere
With the smooth sounds of Jamie Cullum and Frank Sinatra this is the place to unwind in the evenings. The staff are extremely friendly and very forthcoming about the ales, offering a taster of the guests so long as you show some interest. The seating arrangement is comfortable as well so you don’t have to worry about the prospects of having a sore back when you decide to leave.

The Food
The Walrus and Carpenter is particularly proud of its award-winning sausages and pride themselves on sourcing their bangers from the same suppliers as Harrods and Fortnum and Mason. They offer a wide variety of sausages, each variant filled with a world of different flavours and included in a number of different dishes including toad in the hole, sausage and mash, or just in a sandwich.

Other meals include jacket potatoes for just under a fiver with a variety of fillings to choose from as well as a choice of salads for just under £7. One of the more interesting sounding meals is the fish in beer batter and chips. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a snack you’ll almost certainly find something tempting, and if they put as much effort into the food as they have with the appearance of the menu then you’ll be very satisfied with your pub grub.

The Drink
If you like proper drinking pub’ then the Walrus and Carpenter won’t disappoint. They serve up a selection of ales, including London Pride, Green King IPA as well as two or three guest ale that rotate every couple of weeks. To make things a little more interactive, a blackboard displays four contenders for the next ale to make it into the pub. If you have a preference then you’ll be encouraged to take your vote to the bar with the possibility of having the opportunity to drink it in a couple of weeks. To make your decision a tad easier you can pick up a little booklet from the bar filled with information about the up and coming ales.

The selection of lagers on tap include Stella, Amstel Bier, Kronenberg, Fosters, Heineken, Strongbow and Carling. If you fancy a glass of wine, you can choose from the cellar fresh wine, which will come from one of two casks embedded in the wall behind the bar. Prices start from around £2.50 for a glass. If you’re celebrating something, perhaps you might like to opt for the Champagne, prices for which start at £25 and stretch up to £90.

Last Word
The menu looks superb, they have a dining area with table service, their drinks selection is top notch and the decor is warm and welcoming. There is no question; Walrus and Carpenter is a good pub.
