Disappointed by the treatment we received by the bouncers at this bar. We were there for a friends birthday on a Saturday night. We weren't aware what time the bar closed so ordered a round of drinks at about 1.45am. At 2am the bouncers informed us the bar was closed. We asked if there was drinking up time as we had a whole bottle of wine. They were very rude and aggressive telling us we had to get out. We asked why we were served drinks 15 mins before close and they said they didn't understand what we were talking about. Grabbed my friend by the scruff of the neck and ushered us out.
E-mailed the bar afterwards but didn't get any response.
And yes the lady on the door is on a power trip! She acted like she was doing us a favour letting us in on a Saturday night even though the bar was half empty!
Would give it no stars if I could. I used to visit this place at least once a week when it first opened to eat Sunday lunch as I live across the road. But then they started under cooking the food and serving it luke warm.
It was my friend's birthday today and I thought we'd drop in. I was with another mixed race girl and an asian guy. We were asked by the girl on the door which group we were with. I said we were just there for a drink. She said you look like the rest of them. You're all dressed up.
The door girl then said how many of you. I said 3, she then started talking to some other customers, a white couple. She asked them if they were on the list they said no. She let them in. They were scruffily dressed. We said are we ok to get in. She said no sorry we're booked for a private party and turned us away.
It is very sad that this type of thing still goes on in this day and age. We left without making a fuss as we knew we were not missing anything.
A really lovely bar, good service and great bar staff but our night was spoiled by a very aggressive bouncer on a powertrip who spent much of the night needlessly interrupting our group and nitpicking; insisting that we move, demanding we move our drinks further down the table and generally stirring up trouble. He managed to upset every one of our very lovely group of friends. We certainly wouldn't go here again in the evening. : (
Nice place! We have just back from the place and I just write to let you know that my coat and the coat of my friend were stolen from the cloakroom. We paid 2 pounds each for the cloakroom service but couldn't get our stuff back. No one in the place really care as you can guess. They took our contact details and promised to call us back tomorrow. It seems it is regular that the stuff are missing from the cloakroom. But who cares? (except of those who have to go home without the coat)
Fantastic food, I had an amazing steak - perfectly cook with home made chips. The atmosphere was lively but not rowdy and the booths were very cosy. Great place - and very reasonably priced for large portions. I will definitely be back!
We are just about to go down for our 3rd Sunday Roast in as many weeks. With big winter portions (you literally get half the chicken) and great tasting food (fresh pork crackling, home made apple sauce to name a couple of nice little touches) they know how to please you like mumma used to. Perfect way to spend a hungover Sunday afternoon is to grab a roast and one of their 'special' Bloody Mary's at the Wenlock and Essex. Get involved!
I had a the perfect lunch for a cold Autumn day. Homemade Venison and vegetable pie (with mash) really warmed me up, as did the very sweet staff and the glass of red wine I had! My partner had a delicious winter version of fish cakes and despite the very generous portions we managed to squeeze in some of their amazing cheesecake.
A highly recommended place, loads of room to get a table yet with really cozy atmosphere. We're looking forward to going in the evening too, I've heard they do great cocktails!

Had a lovely time here at the Wenlock and Essex. I booked for my boyfriends birthday for around 15 people and the service could not have been better. No one was without a drink in hand and the food was fab, generous portions (I had the half chicken for lunch, succulent and flavousome) where chicken sometimes lacks having ordered in in other places. Heaps of roast veg and potatoes, I was a very happy camper.
As we moved from lunch to evening we had a party on our hands, great atmosphere, the place was pumping. Definitely recommend this place, staff happy to oblige with everything even my bought in cake!
Recently had a lovely Sunday lunch with a large group of friends here - the service was speedy and friendly and the food was delicious. A really chilled environment for a long lazy day at the pub. The staff are relaxed and were fine with people dropping in through out the course of the day. Quick to take your order when needed but not pushy in terms of asking you to all order at once or vacate the table at a certain time! Would definitely go again - although this time I hope for a private party in the back room - that dancing pole looks super fun!
To celebrate a friends birthday, a group of us booked in at the Wenlock and Essex for a proper Sunday lunch.
On arrival the restaurant was pleasantly atmospheric and its soft lighting and furnishings were warming both aesthetically and in comfort, this was much appreciated as outside had a real nip in the November air.
We were greeted by a well presented trendy young gent who showed us to a large rustic table which seated our party adequately.
The table was nicely laid out and there were plenty of menus to go around.
We proceeded to sustain the warm vibes by ordering a bottle of rich and plummy cab sav and a round of beers.
The Camden Bitter and IPA got all of our votes, however it would be nice to see a few more cask "real ales" such as Woodfordes Wherry etc as an option.
We ordered "Mid- pint" from the traditional but varied menu and as a welcome surprise our food arrived before we got the second round in.
The dishes all appeared together and everyone in the party had a smug grin once the waiter had put our plates before us.
I had chosen the Roast beef with Horseradish and veg. It was nicely presented and a very sizable portion with the key feature on my plate being at least five slices of very tender and succulent beef. It was a quality joint of beef with no chewy or stringy bits to be left over. The accompanying carrots, peas and broccoli were very crisp and fresh and the Yorkshire pud was almost as big as the local Emirates stadium.
The nice rich Gravy was served in a tiny jug (which really should have been bigger as it was very pleasant) but this was no problem as the waiter was quick to bring more to the table, on request.
The horseradish was as good as I've had and some crackling which was shared around by those who had gone for the roast pork option was truly sumptuous.
We paid the bill, (avg.£15 a head) and then kicked back in loungey chairs to take in soul classics that were playing subtly as background music.
A lovely afternoon and meal
What a place, nothing but brilliant. Came to Wenlock and Essex the week Wenlock and Essex opened and have become a local since. Friday and Saturday nights are just buzzing, great atmosphere, staff who know how to pour great drinks and the food is awesome too. Decor is fantastic really quirky and homely with nice dimly lit lights and comfy boothes. Me and my friends fancied cocktails and not only did the bar girl offer us an already great cocktail menu but she then told us she could make anything else we fancied instead, name the cocktail. Told us all about it as she made it and made us feel that little bit more treated even though we were only spending 7 quid. Decided to bring my boyfriend down for hangover Sunday roast and bloody Mary's the other week and we were nothing but impressed with the portion sizes and quality of the food. Have recommended Wenlock and Essex to all our friends and even going to bring the folks here for Sunday roast again. Will choose chicken next time its huge!
One word fail. Tried to go to the living room's replacement. Oh dear. Despite being practically empty the bouncers announced that that tonight was private parties only. Brilliant considering we were meeting two separate groups of friends in there not at 'private parties'. Being painfully sober and not open to massaging over inflated egos we decided to leave it there. But not before clocking that veggy roasts cost £12. Egos are not the only over inflated things there clearly. Good luck surviving the current climate as a banal new soulless entity on Essex Road.
I went here for the first time for Sunday roast with my husband and our friends last week and was really impressed. We were given great service and the food was delicious. I had the whole half a chicken, which was huge and tasted delicious!
Our new Sunday fave!
What a fantastic change from the Living Rooms! A fresh bustling circus themed pub which was really buzzing when we came in last Thursday. I came with my girlfriend who is really pedantic about her steak, and decided to risk it and ordered the Rump steak whilst I had the fish cakes. My fish cakes were beautifully cooked, crusty on the outside and really moist and flavorsome inside. The lady couldn't fault the steak which is a first-we are coming back! Casual yet attentive service makes this the perfect wind-down after work place, and the beer selection is pretty impressive. I'm only sorry I had work in the morning otherwise I would have stayed to sample a few more of the beers....”
