The ViewLondon Review
There isn't much to the West Quay Bar (or its sister venue nearby, aptly named East Quay Bar) but within narrow limitations they manage to pull off a reasonable drink. Hardly a destination bar, if you're at the Excel Centre in need of libation this is a decent option.
The Venue
Smack bang in the middle of The Boulevard, drinking here is essentially like hanging out in a shopping mall concourse. On the plus side there are high ceilings with lots of natural light, bar stools to rest your tired legs, a small television with Sky News playing and it is clean, as you’d expect from the Excel. On the negative side there is a constant stream of people ambling by and the hard surfaces bounce noise around you. West Quay Bar is definitely functional.
The Atmosphere
It isn't cosy or atmospheric at the West Quay Bar but the staff are hospitable and keep up with the constant demands of the people traffic. The clientele here is wholly dependent on the show that’s on at the time – everything from motor shows to toy fairs have held conferences and events here, bringing in vast numbers of like-minded people. The functional air of a venue serving a purpose is clear, but it’s not promising anything other than that.
The Food
A limited menu features sandwiches and salads (for just under £5 with crisps) as well as sushi. Premium, thick biscuits are displayed in glass jars to tempt your sweet tooth.
The Drink
The most striking feature of the West Quay Bar is the Champagne (Moet and Chandon) by the quarter, half and full bottle with a premium price to match. If you have just closed a big deal there is a Dom Perignon with an impressive enough price tag to prove the size of your wallet. Carlsberg Export is available in draught or bottle. Tuborg - a Danish Pilsner made by Carlsberg - comes with a cool pull-off tab on the bottle and is crisp on the palate; however, its status as a premium import lager is confirmed by the cost.
The Last Word
If you find yourself at the Excel Centre and in need of snack or drink, West Quay Bar has the essential ingredients to recharge your batteries and send you back onto the showroom floor refreshed and ready for battle.
