The ViewLondon Review
‘What cocktails will not cure, there is no cure for’ proclaims Westbourne House – a glitzy cocktail bar dishing up the perfect remedy for punters with a weakness for daringly delicious concoctions.
The Venue
Elegant Parisian living room meets funky New York loft at the immaculate Westbourne House, a decadent cocktail bar offering a trendy stop along the well-to-do Westbourne Grove. A waterfall of fairy lights draped across the front windows is a pretty introduction to this beautiful space. Inside, a long dining room with dark floorboards makes up the front bar, with flickering candlelight and a glowing fireplace illuminating a mix of retro décor with Baroque touches.
Seat yourself at the shiny vintage-style claw-foot tables or one of the metallic square high-tops lined-up in prime window positions, or climb the white-bannistered staircase to a loft-style living room area lit by a seductive red-hued lampshade. Another funky side room is framed with chocolate banquettes and low tables. There are mirrors everywhere, creating light and space (an aspect of the design that helps to keep the beautiful people entertained).
The Atmosphere
Cocktail connoisseurs and cashed-up West Londoners frequent this sophisticated bar and fortunately it succeeds in not becoming too pretentious. It gets booked up from around 8pm on Saturday nights so reserving a spot is a good idea and generally you can expect a buzzing crowd up for a good night. Table service and attentive staff add to the chi-chi air.
The Food
In the evenings, the light tapas-style menu is great to accompany your cocktails, with the usual Spanish-style bites like chorizo tortilla (£5), Spanish olives (£3), herby patatas with rosemary (£4.50) and cod croquetas (£5.50) all on the menu. The charcuterie and cheese platters are good-value at £7.50 and, notably, all their chicken and eggs are free-range. During the day, you can grab standard fare like the chunky Westbourne House Burger (£8.95), salads, fishcakes and sandwiches, from £5.45, and there’s a nice little breakfast menu with treats like pancakes and whipped cream. You can also tuck into brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-4.30pm.
The Drink
You can’t miss the cocktails at Westbourne House. Both resident and guest mixologists have created an extensive menu with delicious options for all, no matter what your spirit of choice. For lovers of the traditional Mother’s Ruin - that’s gin in case you were wondering - a classic Clover Club made with Hayman's gin is zesty and divine. Perfectly balancing tart lemon juice with the sweetness of fresh raspberries and homemade sugar syrup, it is topped with a creamy swathe of egg white. If you’re in need of a caffeine hit, the robust Kentucky Express always gets the blood flowing: a delicious mix of Coffee Heering liqueur, a shot of fresh espresso and Woodford Reserve Bourbon is lightened with homemade vanilla sugar. The martinis are a must, too, with six options to leave you feeling shaken and stirred. Delightful quotes and anecdotes pepper the cocktail menu, making the process of choosing your tipple even more enjoyable. While you'll work up quite a bill drinking them all night, the quality of the cocktails makes the price tags (upwards from £7.75) stomachable.
A varied wine list starts at a pricey (£4.95 per glass and £19 per bottle) for fruity, minerally French Sauvignon or Argentinean Malbec. There is not much available by the glass but if you’re that way inclined, you can splash out up to £40 on a bottle of premium wine or all the big names in specialty Champagnes (also available in magnums).
The Last Word
Worth adoring for the cocktails alone, Westbourne House is alluring and resplendent on all fronts, making it a complete package for a top night out in West London.
