The ViewLondon Review
This cosy little pub is located right in the center of Kingston and provides an intimate environment for a quiet pint. With a basic selection of drinks and a wireless internet connection, this pub provides a no-frills environment you can relax in.
The Venue
Wheelwrights is a small pub just off Eden Street in Kingston. Most people don’t notice it because of its small size and the fact it has an entrance tucked away round the side of the building.
Once you do track it down, this pub is actually pleasantly homely, despite being located right in the centre of town. The decor of Wheelwrights - or ‘Wheelies’ as it’s locally known - is that of a typical British pub with a wooden floor and bar, a mix of traditional tables and chairs, brown leather sofas and relaxed coffee tables. Its small size provides an intimate setting where you immediately feel at home, even if it’s the first time you’ve been there. There are also three large screen TVs (32inch) that show the sport and a small smoking area out the back of the pub with decking, heaters and tables and chairs.
The Atmosphere
The non-threatening environment means you can happily head here for a drink on your own and still feel at ease. You can also head to Wheelwrights with a laptop in hand and take advantage of the wireless internet provided – you’ll often spy people sitting happily by themselves or with work colleagues and friends. Its convenient location also makes it a good place to meet clients. The pub does show sporting events but generally does not attract the really loud rowdy types.
The Food
Food like Thai green chicken curry, roast lamb, fish and chips and sandwiches are available until 4pm. A sandwich is £4 and of the main meals such as the beef lasagna come in at £6.50.
The Drink
The drinks on offer cover the basics that you would expect from a pub and prices are pretty standard for the area. The draught beers they offer are Fosters, Guinness, Speckled Hen, Kronenbourg and Strongbow averaging at about £3.10. They have a few bottled beers (Budweiser, Corona and Tiger) and a small selection of wine - a small glass of house wine costing £3.00.
The Last Word
If you’re looking for a place to relax in a non-threatening environment then Wheelwrights fits the bill. It’s not somewhere to go for fancy cocktails but basic lager, spirits and wine are available and the wireless internet and large screen TVs are a definite plus.
