So location, location, location really IS everything. Positioned right by the river, the White Cross is something of a Richmond landmark - and with good reason.

The Venue
The White Cross is a pub for all seasons. Located on the river with a large outdoor terraced area, it’s a huge hit in the summer months when people soak in the fantastic river views with a cool pint in hand. In the winter, however, the maze-like, cosy, traditional interior makes it an ideal place for escaping the chill with open fireplaces working their magic to warm frozen fingers and toes. Upstairs is a laid back dining area with the main pub space located on the ground floor. A cute touch are the two entrances to the pub, one of which can’t be used during high tides as it’s completely cut off by the water – a natural riverside pub, indeed!

The Atmosphere
The White Cross can be seen from some way away and so it attracts anyone and everyone. Located close to Twickenham, the pub has become a pre- and post-rugby watering hole for lucky ticket-holders, while the rest of the time locals and tourists mix side-by-side to enjoy the fantastic views. The whole atmosphere here is one of a laid back country pub and you couldn’t feel further removed from London even if you jumped on a train to Scotland for the day.

The Food
The food at the White Cross is your usual Young’s pub fare. Think Cumberland sausage and mash, pies, fish and chips, doorstep sandwiches and sharing plates with little surpassing the £10 a dish mark. It may not be the most inspiring selection of pub grub but it does promise to be of good quality.

The Drink
Young’s ales dominate the taps and are the main focal point of a drink menu that includes some pretty bog-standard, mainstream but cheap bottles of wine and your usual collection of high street spirits behind the bar. The choice of ales rotates regularly but the standard Young’s Ordinary, Special, London Gold and Bombardier are usually in attendance. And they’re pretty well-kept, too. The best thing is they don’t bump up the price of a pint here, despite the incredible riverside location.

The Last Word
The White Cross is the envy of many pubs across London. For one of the best riverside pubs in the capital, this is definitely up there.
