The ViewLondon Review
Authentic British pubs are in decline and they’re increasingly hard to find. Luckily, there are still pubs like The White Ferry House, which keep true to their traditional values.
The Venue
Located a short walk away from Pimlico station, The White Ferry House is a pub that dates back to the 19th Century, and it still has the gleam of a traditional boozer about it. Divided into two parts, there’s a ‘games’ section and a saloon bar. The former has a pool table and darts board and consists predominantly of locals who have been coming here for years. This area is small and a bit dark and only dedicated drinkers sit in this part. The saloon bar is completely different, though. It has old fashioned wooden fixtures and ceramic spirit casks that line the top of the bar. This area is lighter and more relaxed. Looking around, you can see a lot of nautical paraphernalia, such as models of seagulls, fish and ducks, brass lanterns hanging in the window and a sea chest. These items are subtle yet add lots of character to the venue.
Upstairs is a hostel, which can fit 74 people, and it is has links with two other pubs: The Green Man, Edgware Road and The Steam Engine in Lambeth. There is a kitchen and a lounge area and being right near to Victoria station, access is really convenient.
The Atmosphere
The time and day of your visit very much determines how loud or raucous it is. On the first Saturday of the month there is a karaoke and DJ night take place on the third Saturday, making it a loud, party affair. When big sports matches are on, it gets quite busy and understandably a bit noisy. Most of the time it’s quite laid back, and it has a good mix of backpackers, locals, workers and tourists. The staff are very friendly and swiftly serve drinks with a beaming smile which is great to see.
The Drink
To please the regulars and lodgers, there are some superb happy hour offers. From Monday-Saturday, 4pm-7pm, two selected draught beers are on offer for £2.50 and it is also on offer between 12pm-3pm on a Sunday. Ales such as Old Speckled Hen (a guest) and Courage Best start at a very reasonable £2.55 a pint, whilst other beers start at £3.20 for a Carlsberg or Fosters. More expensive options include Staropramen, Stella and Strongbow. There’s even a small wine list with some bargains on it. The house Dona Florencia red or white is good value at £3.20 a small, £4.10 a large and £11.95 a bottle. There'a also a wine that comes in a half bottle, the Carta Vieja Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, which is £7.50. For sparkling options there are three on offer: Prosecco (£6.50 a small bottle/£17 a full bottle), Samur (£25) and Gonet Champagne (£32).
The Last Word
The White Ferry House is a breath of fresh air and restores your faith in old school pubs which stay true to their heritage. If you want a glimpse of an authentic British pub then you should definitely make a visit here.
