The ViewLondon Review
If you have a fondness for chancing upon those delightful little pubs and restaurants that are tucked away discreetly within a London alleyway, courtyard or backstreet, then Williamsons Tavern off Bow Lane is bound to appeal.
The Venue
At No. 1 Groveland Court stands the historic Williamsons Tavern, a pub split into two for pub goers and diners that, although boasting a fascinating past dating back to the 17th Century, underwent a serious renovation in the late 1930s leaving little of the original structure in tact. That said, it’s still a warm and attractive establishment with a pleasant outdoor seating area that makes the most of the modest courtyard, possessing a funky little feature in the form of a button on each table that turns on the individual heaters. The Tavern is surprisingly spacious on the inside with a bar for each area and plenty of seating available.
The Atmosphere
Its location in the centre of town makes Williamsons Tavern quite the draw for city workers and the odd tourist. The tavern’s cosy hideaway, coupled with the fact that many suits come here to lose the memory of their day in a glass of foaming brown ale, gives the place a relaxed and comfortable ambience that cuddles you as you walk in.
The Food
The Tavern has a selection of menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can expect the usual suspects here with the Full English prepared in the mornings (along with a veggie version), fish and chips, and sausage and mash. The odd sophisticated alternative may appear such as the duck leg confit with redcurrant jus but, for the most part, this is traditional and enjoyable pub fare.
The Drink
The ales available at Williamsons Tavern are varied and flavorsome ranging from Timothy Taylor and Bombardier to Marston’s Pedigree and Morland Old Speckled Hen, a smooth and sweet blend with an aromatic combination of fruit and nuts that requires a second pint in swift succession. A monthly guest ale also makes an appearance here. The wine selection includes the splendidly crisp Montana Sauvignon Blanc, which uses an exotic blend of tropical fruits to give it a rewarding freshness, and Wolf Bass Red Label Shiraz Cabernet - a soft red wine with a dash of berries and a delicate touch of peppery spice and mint.
The Last Word
If you happen to be in Bow Lane, a quick diversion into Groveland Court for a pint at Williamsons Tavern is recommended. Inside, it provides the cosiness required on a winter’s day and outside, the perfect courtyard setting for a long summer’s evening.
