The ViewLondon Review

The Wilton Arms is a spectacularly ordinary pub but sometimes, amidst a sea of try-hard gastropubs, that’s all you want.

The Venue
The Wilton Arms is located at the beginning of a quiet mews – its front is covered with flowers upon flowers upon flowers to the point of over blooming, which makes the pub stand out proudly and brightly, especially in the summer time with its array of award winning coloured petals.

Inside is slightly disappointing by comparison, but that’s not to say the decor isn’t decent. There is ample seating space and it is rarely over crowded, save for big sporting matches displayed on the flat screen. The rest is pretty standard except for their dark red ceiling that can appear rather ominous.

The Atmosphere
It’s probably correct to say that this pub has no atmosphere. That isn’t necessarily as bad as it sounds, because it is a serious and traditional pub. There are no gimmicks, no frills and nothing exceptional, which is a breath of fresh air amongst the plethora of themed and commercial pubs nearby. In addition to the after work suits, foreign tourists and locals mingle freely but whilst it is refreshingly unpretentious it may be best to bring your own atmosphere to avoid falling asleep - grab a tweed-clad booth for privacy.

The Food
The food like the atmosphere is not exceptional, but certainly adequate. Don’t expect gastro-pub cuisine, but don’t expect chip butties either. The menu is traditional and the dishes are always hearty. The prices are slightly high but that is definitely to be expected from the area.

The Drink
This pub is a Shepherd Neame and has a good selection of bitters and lagers. The notable lager that isn’t available London-wide is Oranjeboom, translated as orange tree, it was brewed by the Dutch Royal Family but transported to England in the hands of King William Of Orange. Their Spitfire is very good too but the barmaids are probably the only exceptional feature about the pub.

The Last Word
If you are looking for a drinking experience then the Wilton Arms is not for you. If on the other hand you desire a quiet and tasty pint in an unobtrusive atmosphere head here.
