The ViewLondon Review
This enormous Youngs bar and restaurant, slapped in the middle of the common, fills every room with a character and charm all of their own. In short, Windmill on the Common is a must visit. The VenueIn the middle of Clapham Common, the recently refurbished Windmill on the Common feels like the beating heart of village green. Each room has its own subtly different style - there’s plenty of space in the beer garden and a large, plush restaurant provides high quality, solid gastro-pub fare. It’s just a five minute walk from the high street, but well worth the effort for a quick drink, dinner or a full night out.
The AtmosphereHeaving on a Friday or Saturday night and pleasantly humming the rest of the time, the Windmill on the Common suits all drinkers with taste. The restaurant provides a warm, nicely lit experience, with friendly staff and comfy seats. The bar is built out of a number of knocked-through old buildings, so has an old, worn-in feel – perfect for a local pub. The crowd is varied, from young to old and poor to rich. It would be hard for anyone not to like its basic charm – although it may feel a little cavernous on slow nights.
The DrinkBefitting its size, the Windmill on the Common has a really good selection of smoky ales, fermented across the country; a long wine list with some particularly good, rich reds; and all the spirits under the sun.
The FoodThe bar snack menu is full of tasty pub grub like fluffy jacket potatoes and gooey, cheesy nachos. But go for a well-priced burger and you won’t be disappointed – juicy and filled with all the salad and garnish you can manage.
The Last WordThe Windmill on the Common is a huge village-style pub, with oodles of charm. The staff are friendly and the food great. If you’re in Clapham, you should really drop by.
