The ViewLondon Review
As part of a large chain, Yates’s kind of does what it says on the tin. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as the chances are you will have visited one at some point in your life, and at least you know exactly what you’re letting yourself in for...
The Venue
This Yates’s is huge and quite a roomy establishment - a good job as it caters for hoards of people who frequent this bar during all times of the day and evening. The décor is fairly generic, in keeping with other Yates’s bars, with a large, long bar area which is heaving during busy times and squashy sofas that are ideal for settling into with a drink. There is also an upstairs area which is hired out for private functions.
The Atmosphere
There is a fun and friendly atmosphere with young, lively staff who match the clientele. As such, this is definitely a venue geared towards the younger end of the market and not the place for a cosy tête-à-tête, but it’s ideal for groups of friends on a night out. Student night is on a Tuesday when selected drinks cost only £1.50.
The Food
There’s a decent choice of cheap mains, with several fish, meat and veggie options. They run several offers including two meals for £6.95, a burger and drink for £5.45, or 2-4-1 on desserts. These are not available on Friday or Saturday, though, and don’t expect anything special in terms of quality.
The Drink
There’s a wide choice of wines available: the house chardonnay is £7.49 a bottle; a New Zealand sauvignon blanc is only £2.99 a glass or £10 a bottle; a pinot grigio rose is available for the same sort of price; and so is the merlot. Cider is available from £3.65, lager from £2.70 and ales from £2.20, with all the usual suspects available. If cocktails are more your style, you might want to take up the offer of 2 glasses for only £6.50, or 2 pitchers for £14. Again, value for money is selected ahead of any genuine quality.
The Last Word
Receiving value for money is guaranteed at Yates’s; individual character and quality food or drink are most certainly not.
