The ViewLondon Review
Located within the confines of a tiny building is this tantalisingly traditional pub.
The Venue
Located at the end of a narrow alley, Ye Olde White Horse is something of a find for those who like their pubs small and quaint. With a facade that measures just a few metres and a scattering of tables covering the entrance on the street, the sight is a welcoming one.
Inside, the pub’s depth makes up for its small width with a red and orange colour scheme that matches the gold fixtures well. There are booth areas at the back that can house large groups and there’s a good amount of seating and big screens show sports and sporting news. Overall, this is a warm and cosy pub that disguises its fraying edges with authenticity that more than makes up for its shortcomings.
The Atmosphere
A few metres from LSE, Ye Olde White Horse pulls in some of the student traffic from the larger pubs and clubs in the area. As well as students there is a good local feel to the pub, which could be down to the chatty nature of the bar staff or random friendly encounters with drinkers. However, the music that rules the airwaves isn’t carefully thought out and can get a little annoying if you’re adverse to the sounds of the Radio 1 play list.
The Food
There are no ambitions at Ye Olde White Horse beyond traditional pub food and the choices include sausage and mash, chilli con carne and ham, egg and chips for comfort in familiarity.
The Drink
Ye Olde White Horse offers a noble range of beers to its followers including Kronenbourg, Becks Vier, Stella and Carling on draught. There is nothing fancy to be found but the bar staff are chatty about the small range of wines.
The Last Word
Ye Olde White Horse is a quaint pub ideal for comfortable drinking with an atmosphere to rival most.
