The ViewLondon Review
Carnaby Street may not have the reputation that it enjoyed in the swinging sixties, but with Zebrano housed among its bricks and mortar it still clutches at the essence of fun and freedom that once made it so popular. The VenueA pyramid of a venue, the spacious club below acts as a large base with an intimate bar above. The fine wooden floors that run throughout give the club class and cool, whilst the colourscheme that floods the walls invites opulence without ego.
The venue boasts two bars - one above and one below ground - so both agoraphobics and claustrophobics can enjoy their drinks in comfort. The furnishings offer privacy and comfort in the way of curving sofas. The soft lights that glow on the deep browns and reds create a sense of passion and personality, a welcome addition to an area filled with faceless brands.
The AtmosphereZebrano attempts to appeal to a respectable crowd, but it can’t help the energetic streak of fun that lurks beneath its surface. Although it may not be the intention of the management, it is a triumph for the club. Embracing the feeling of the child within staves away the self-consciousness of customers and makes for an enjoyable atmosphere.
This club has a wealth of space that, while excellent for dancing, can leave it looking a little baron on occasion with a sense of physical and mental emptiness. If you stumble in on a night like this then the bar upstairs should allay all fears of a disappointing night with its cosy seating and alfresco option. Zebrano attracts a clientele worthy of celebrating this smooth setting and it would be unusual to feel out of place within.
The MusicThe music ticks by with the sound of funky house ever present. In a move of charming willingness to broaden its horizons, Zebrano has introduced an evening of live music one Sunday out of every month. Despite its lack of diversity, the music that’s played predominantly for the rest of the month seems to inspire a large quota of the clientele in attendance, and they are more than happy to get down.
The DrinkIt’s a shame that the old in-house brewery is now defunct. A fresh, organic, home brewed beer is an attractive option to own. However, what they do posses is an array of beers and wines and an average cocktail list. It has all you need for a night and by day you could do worse than here for a quiet drink in the heart of London’s shopping district.
The Last WordWithout drowning itself in originality, Zebrano remains worthy of a visit. Whether it’s to submerge yourself in the depths of the spacious and friendly club or to float by for a beer or two in the bar above.
