The ViewLondon Review
Zero Degrees is a trendy restaurant and micro brewery in the heart of leafy Blackheath. Set slightly back off the road you could be forgiven for mistaking it for just a brewery, but on closer inspection it’s a very interesting, inviting restaurant and drinking hole for all to enjoy - including children during the day.
The Venue
Blackheath is in a very nice neck of the woods, with plenty of green areas to enjoy, quaint little boutique shops and, of course, many pleasant restaurants and bars. This is why Zero Degrees has aimed slightly above the average bar in bringing a bit of culture to the area - especially for the discerning beer drinker.
On entering the bright white passageway you will see the brewing process in action with the large machinery doing its magic to bring you the freshest pint this side of Belgium. Pass by them and go through to the small bar area where you can sample the goods. The restaurant stretches right round the bar and on the balcony above – there are plenty of spacious tables but you may still be in for a little wait as it does get very busy Friday and Saturday evenings.
The Atmosphere
This place feels very alive and buzzing when it’s busy due to the ever working micro brewery and high industrial ceilings, but catch it on a quiet night and, unfortunately, there’s not much of an atmosphere at all.
The Food
‘Delicious’ springs to mind when it comes to describing the culinary delights at Zero Degrees. You will find an extensive menu of 23 pizzas all baked in a wood burning oven with the freshest ingredients - not just your everyday ham and mushroom either. Instead, really interesting toppings can be found: mango tandoori chicken – tandoori chicken, mangos, onions, red peppers on a curry sauce topped with fresh coriander; or salmon and mascarpone – smoked salmon, mascarpone and smoked cheese, fresh tomatoes, rocket and garlic sauce. As well as pizzas, they serve gourmet sausage and mash, salad, pasta, and mussels (served in a kilo pot with chips and mayo, with a choice of six different sauces like Thai green curry and Creole).
The Drink
Obviously the main attraction at Zero Degrees is beer. Served in half or pint glasses, 5L or 50L party kegs to takeaway, the choice is amazing. From Black Lager to Pale Ale, Pilsner and Wheat Ale you’re bound to find one that tempts you. Its all hand crafted and contains no artificial sweeteners or colourings and, unlike the regular filtered and pasteurised beer you’ll be used to from more industrial breweries, the experts at Zero Degrees leave the yeast alive in their beer for an altogether more flavoursome brew. At only £2.60 a pint its cheap enough to be adventurous and try a few. There are different flavours to try such as peach and grapefruit Pale Ale, which has a refreshing zesty aftertaste but whilst still retaining the lager flavour due to the lack of sweeteners! You will also find a banana and vanilla Wheat Ale and all the beers are of a very high quality.
Beer isn’t the only thing on the drinks menu though. Rest assured, you can also get a very nice bottle or glass of wine from their fairly extensive wine list – house Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz as well as their wide choice of 8 different Champagnes and sparkling wines to include Veuve Clicquot and Laurent Perrier Rose.
The Last Word
Even if you’re not a big beer drinker, go to Zero Degrees for the food - it’s just as good and you can always have a glass of wine.
