With a name that evokes notions of exotic cuisine, Ziloufs in fact offers a simplified version of pan Asian food in an eclectic, comforting environment ideal for the locals of Islington.

The Venue
On Upper Street, an area of Islington already awash with chichi restaurants and bars, Ziloufs holds its own, having built a reputation with the locals over the past year and a half since its change of direction of its menu. The aim is to offer a limited but good quality menu featuring Asian and European fusion cuisine, whilst also giving customers a delectable cocktail menu to make the venue a destination ideal for the whole evening. The decor is chic with a hint of contemporary quirkiness, with neutral blues offset with gold and sleek low hanging lampshades contrasting haphazard antique lamps and black chandeliers. The two seating areas make the transition from bar to restaurant effortless, giving customers the option of lounging on leather sofas before dining.

The Atmosphere
The crowd that frequents Ziloufs tends to be young professionals looking to relax on every night of the week, be it over a few cocktails or a civilised meal. The staff are very friendly and their polite service only adds to the casual atmosphere. As the lighting dims throughout the evening, little nooks in the restaurant are perfect for a romantic rendezvous, but around the bar the larger seating areas are kept lively with tipsy customers reaping the rewards of the happy hour.

The Food
The menu may be small, but all the fusion dishes offered are well presented, decently sized and good value for money. Starters range from £5.50 to £6.50, mains for £9 to £18.50 and desserts for only £4.50. The lime prawns are a delicious, refreshing starter, with perfectly cooked prawns on top of crunchy courgette and noodles, delivering a balanced citrus punch. For something meatier, the lamb Scotch egg is an endearing take on the classic British snack, packed full of spicy flavour which works well with the mild creamy yolk of the egg.

For those who are starving beyond belief, or couples willing to share, The T-bone steak for mains has a moreish, slightly charred taste, and the salt and pepper squid that accompanies it is delightful. The Asian slaw is also a treat, adding real spice and lemongrass acidity to the otherwise simple side. The pan roasted lamb is served pink, allowing the sweet natural flavour of the lamb to come through, with some sharp, warm flavours added by the lemon and mustard vinaigrette. For a light dessert, the passion fruit mousse with tangy mango sorbet is the ideal balance of creamy and fruity. If you’ve got a stronger sweet tooth then the sticky toffee pudding isn’t too heavy but still gives the saccharine kick you expect.

The Drink
Ziloufs are proud of their cocktails and they fly out of the bar during happy hour, with enough choice to keep the punters pleased for around £6 to £7 each. The raspberry and vanilla martini is a delectable fruity concoction with a sweet undertone, whilst the Pear and Lemongrass is a little more unique and also extremely refreshing.

The Last Word
Bringing together a relaxed gastro pub attitude with an exciting Asian fusion menu, Ziloufs has made its mark on the Upper Street dining scene.
