The ViewLondon Review
Head down for dishes that won’t strike you for their creativity but will gratify you nonetheless in this charming neighbourhood trattoria.
The Venue
Just as a traditional Italian restaurant, the decor is simple with sturdy rustic furniture and velvety curtains. Tables are very close to each other, there is some extra seating downstairs and a few more tables outside, even though the street is not particularly inviting and some edging would surely add to its cosiness.
The Atmosphere
If you are looking for a fashionable, vibrant spot for a meal 57 L'Osteria would not probably be your best choice, as the restaurant is pretty laid-back and is definitely more suitable for a comfortable lunch than a stylish dinner. The staff are friendly and chatty and you can watch the chefs prepare your dishes in the open plan kitchen.
The Food
The menu plays it safe, with many dishes echoing old-school Italian cuisine (think warm seafood and cured beef as starters and main courses dominated by veal-based dishes) that some might find a bit boring and uninventive. Luckily there is also a wide range of pizzas to fall back on, and they are all worth a try. Also don’t forget to check the specials on the chalkboards.
All dishes come in very generous portions and recall traditional Italian flavours; the bruschetta pomodoro is delightfully simple yet aromatic, the pastas are cooked to perfection with the right balance of sauce and herbs and the pizzas are puffy yet crispy around the edges, with plenty of fresh mozzarella cheese and quality toppings.
The Drink
No surprises on the wine list either, which keeps it short and simple featuring the most renowned Italian wines. Premium bottles are also available and there is some choice among international wines; unless you are looking for something special, a bottle of Cotes du Rhone at £14.95 is pretty enjoyable and very good value for money, too.
The Last Word
57 L'Osteria is an understated, reassuringly simple restaurant which offers an informal, yet inviting, trattoria-style environment with good food and cheerful service. It is probably not worth the trip if you are not in the area but it is a great choice as your friendly neighbourhood trattoria.
