Acorn 20 is a self-proclaimed urban bar and kitchen, reflected in its international tapas and drinks menu.

The Venue
Acorn 20 is handily located across the road from Kingston station, close to a number of other restaurants, bars and clubs. The layout of the bar is simple to navigate; the seating is dotted around a central bar area including booths with mini TVs easily spied. The colourscheme is predominantly black complete with black napkins; however, rather than being cloying it actually opens out the space, creating a decadent feel. There is also an outdoor smoking patio, complete with seating and heaters.

The Atmosphere
The clientele at Acorn 20 are generally young professionals with a large contingent of locals and regulars, many of whom clearly know the bar staff, who are friendly and welcoming to all. As there’s nothing particularly outrageous or exceptional about this bar it does offer up something of an unpretentious blank canvas, which lends itself well for a chilled out drink with friends.

The Music
On a day-to-day basis, Acorn 20 plays a variety of music; however, come Friday and Saturday night you will find a DJ throwing out loud funky house tunes fit for a boogy.

The Food
Acorn 20 offers up a menu of basic bar dishes and tapas. There’s a lunchtime menu that provides a selection of paninis and sandwiches averaging £3.50. However, the tapas selection is definitely the highlight, available after lunchtime and costing just £3.75 per dish. A diverse selection of world tapas covers many cuisines and dishes include chicken yakatori, nacho cheese pequitos, deep fried camenbert and cranberry coulis. There are also a number of vegetarian dishes within the tapas menu, which is an appreciated touch.

The Drink
There is a large selection of lager and cider on tap with prices ranging from £3-£3.30. The wine and Champagne list is not extensive with just three whites and reds, two roses and four bottles of Champagne. A small glass of wine ranges between £3.30-£6.30 and a bottle Champagne costs £35-£100.

If these low prices still aren’t enough to defy the credit crunch then they also have a happy hour called Social Club that takes place 5pm-8pm, Monday to Friday with cheap deals on cocktails, house wine, Fosters and house spirits.

The Last Word
Acorn 20 is an upmarket venue for Kingston without the price jump that many venues in the area have started to impose.
