The atmosphere at Al Sultan is slightly 1960's with overstuffed chairs and starched linen and, sadly, it's often very empty but the food and (rather expensive) wine are excellent. I usually never get to the grills as I still haven't finished exploring the great mezze possibilities of hot and cold starters.

For those who know what beauty can be encompassed in warm foul (sic), Al Sultan does one of the best. Ditto that equally 'ordinary' thing, humous: at Al Sultan it's perfect. Grilled chicken livers arrive and must be eaten quickly before they harden. I love the little pickled aubergines stuffed with walnuts although waiters always counsel these really should be eaten with a grill. I've never ventured onto the lamb's testicles though. The Al Sultan starter mezze also has a huge range for vegetarians without making carnivorous friends feel they are suffering. Service is fine, a bit uncertain whether to be supercilious or super friendly though. I think Ramadan - 6 pm onwards, is a good time to go to Al Sultan's as it's full! (Incidentally, I understand Lebanese restaurants are usually owned by Christians.)

Al Sultan manages to combine exquisite cusine, fine wine and a high class atmosphere. The the starting platters are of the highest quality, with dozens of delicious combinations using the freshest ingredients, the finest meats and vegetables and an array of spices.

The Al Sultan grills are superb too and the traditional baklava for desert is not to be missed. I had a wonderful time at Al Sultan and will definitely visit again!

I’d never eaten Lebanese food before visiting Al Sultan, and it a good introduction to the cuisine. It’s not that relaxing for first-timers though – the staff are very proficient and the whole ambience was quite ‘grown-up’. I also wasn’t so keen about Al Sultan’s choice of music, which was a bit pan-pipe heavy for my liking.
