The ViewLondon Review
A couple of minutes’ walk from Wimbledon station, the Alexandra is a large and well-established pub, comprised of multiple bar areas to suit a range of preferences.
The Venue
The Alexandra consists of three separate bar areas on its ground floor level, as well as a rooftop terrace. Downstairs, a spacious main room offers plenty of seating and several widescreen TVs screening sport. The slightly more worn-looking Green Bar lies to the left, and provides access to a large and more glamorous space containing glossy dark wood furnishings, twinkly lights and ornate armchairs and sofas on which to lounge.
The roof terrace (open all year round) is definitely worth a look, and is proudly billed as being the only one of its kind in Wimbledon. On it, a beach hut style bar faces a range of comfortable seating areas – mostly sheltered from the elements; an enclosed section on the left (signposted as the Love Shack) provides further privacy if so desired. Chilly customers are advised to take a blanket from a hamper beside the bar, but the array of large and effective heaters render them largely unnecessary.
The Atmosphere
On account of its spaciousness and diverse interior, the Alexandra is a popular pub amongst locals and attracts a varied clientele. Sports fans tend to flock to the main bar, whilst a younger crowd tend to seek respite on the roof terrace. Bar staff are efficient and cope admirably with the steady influx of customers.
The Food
Pub grub of the slightly more sophisticated (and expensive) variety is on offer, including classic fish pie with French beans and crusty bread (£10.25) and smoked chicken and baby tomato salad with mixed leaves and a fresh tarragon dressing (£8.95).There are also a range of bar snacks on offer, including anchovies on toast (£5.50) and homemade cheese straws (£3.50).
The Drink
A range of real ales are available, as well as the expected, no-frills lagers such as Fosters and Stella Artois. A number of beers are sourced from the excellent Sambrook’s brewery, including the malty Junction (£3.80 a pint).
The Last Word
The Alexandra is a solid bet for a decent evening out in Wimbledon; its interior varied enough to satisfy a range of tastes. The rooftop terrace is particularly worth making a trip to if you’re looking for an al fresco drink in a more unusual setting to the typical, quaint south west London beer gardens you tend to find in SW19.
