Looking for a Soho bar that’s chilled, trendy but not trying too hard? Your best bet is Alphabet.

The Venue
Just a skip and a jump from Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus, but concealed enough to escape the throngs, Alphabet Bar is your typical trendy Soho bar with a heart. You'll spot the cool, concrete sign and bright green clock outside and, heading inside, the graffiti coloured wall and exposed brickwork scream New York subway. But in a good way. The ground floor isn't huge but, if you go on a week night, you'll most likely get a seat - choose from sofas in the corner or the red benches with small tables. On the wall you'll find an impressive collection of album covers - but don't let that intimidate the less 'too cool for school' amongst you; you'll spot Wet Wet Wet and Neil Diamond up there as well.

The large bar with lights, jars of nuts and delicious food smells wafting out makes queuing (at the weekend) that bit more bearable. Downstairs there's more space and this area works well as a party venue (there are media companies galore nearby). The walls here are covered in graffiti too, and one wall is covered in a giant London map. The toilets leave a lot to be desired, unfortunately, with exposed cisterns and cramped cubicles.

The Atmosphere
There's a laid back, basement feel to the place, with low, atmospheric lighting adding to the atmosphere without leaving everybody in near darkness. Mostly, the Alphabet Bar is full of young Soho media types, as it just around the corner from numerous magazine houses and film companies. Expect to see groups of friends heading out for after-work drinks on a week night, and everybody and his dog at weekends. Brace yourself if you're planning a visit on Friday night; you'll need to get there early if you want a chance of getting a seat as the place is well and truly packed.

The Food
There’s typical bar grub on offer at slightly higher than average prices. Try an Aberdeen Angus burger for £8.20. It comes with cheese, smoky bacon and a portion of delicious chips (not mentioned on the menu so a nice surprise), all served on a wooden board. There are some nice light starters too – try the tasty baked Camembert with grapes, and toasted crusty bread piled high for £6.20.

The Drink
Drinks are London prices but not astronomical. There’s a great cocktail selection, including classics like mojito and cosmopolitan, all for £7. House wine is a very drinkable Cattarrato (white) or Nero d’Avola (red) for £4.80, and for beer drinkers there’s Budvar (£4) and Fruli (£4.50) on draught, and Corona and Peroni by the bottle, amongst others.

The Last Word
If you’re looking for a nice bar with a fun atmosphere, Alphabet is a good choice – on a week night. Come Friday, you might want to shop around if you’re hoping to have an audible conversation with friends.
